moana liveaction review

Disney has released the first teaser for the highly anticipated Moana live-action film, reigniting the call of the ocean and bringing the young heroine of Motunui to life. However, whether audiences will rush to theaters remains a pressing “tough question” for the studio.

Stunning Visuals, Almost Identical to the Animated Original

The teaser reveals vibrant, eye-catching visuals closely resembling the 2016 animated hit, which earned $684 million worldwide and two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“How Far I’ll Go”). Catherine Laga’aia debuts as Moana, singing a snippet of the iconic song, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Maui appears mostly in silhouette with his magical fishhook.

Fans praised the teaser for its bright, lively animation-quality visuals, but some critics questioned the need for a live-action adaptation that mirrors the animated film so closely.

Beautiful, Yet “Artificial”

Viewers noted that much of the film relies heavily on CGI, from forests and oceans to even human characters. The live-action version of Heihei, Moana’s comedic chicken companion, drew particular criticism for looking “plastic” compared to its animated charm.

Comments include:

  • It’s beautiful, but feels soulless.
  • If it’s identical to the animation, why bother?
  • A creative effort that seems pointless.

Timing and Franchise Saturation

Another concern is release timing. The original animated Moana debuted in 2016, Moana 2 in 2024, and now the live-action version is set for July 10, 2026 less than two years after the sequel. Many fans feel Disney is overloading audiences with repeated content:

  • The release schedule is crazy.
  • Watching Moana repeatedly feels exhausting.
  • Is Disney running out of ideas?

Despite skepticism, it’s too early to declare the live-action Moana a failure. While Snow White struggled at the box office, other Disney adaptations like Lilo & Stitch succeeded, proving the studio can learn from past mistakes. Similarly, the live-action How To Train Your Dragon faced similar criticism for mimicking the animation, yet succeeded by introducing new emotional layers. Moana live-action may achieve the same.

Ultimately, whether audiences feel “overexposed” to Moana will only be clear when the film hits theaters. Until then, Disney bets on spectacular visuals, nostalgic music, and emotional resonance to bring the beloved story to life once again.
