Mexican Group ‘Jeans’ Member Mentions NewJeans’s Plagiarism Allegation On SNS

Paty Sirvent, member of the Mexican group Jeans, revealed her position regarding NewJeans’s plagiarism controversy

Recently, Paty Sirvent shared a photo comparing Jeans and NewJeans on her SNS account, saying “Love it (me encanta)”. She also shared a post accusing NewJeans of plagiarising Jeans added a caption, saying “We’re not so wrong (No estábamos tan equivocados)”.

Ever since last month, HYBE and ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin have been in conflict. HYBE suspected Min Hee-jin of attempting to take over the management rights of ADOR while Min Hee-jin claimed that ILLIT, the new girl group under another label of HYBE – Belift Lab, copied NewJeans.

Amid the dispute, netizens pointed out evidence of NewJeans plagiarizing Mexican girl group Jeans.

An article raising the issue by Mexican media outlet El Sigol last year suddenly became a hot topic. They pointed out similarities between the two groups, from their costumes to visual concepts, saying “Claims that South Korean girl group NewJeans took inspiration from Mexican girl group Jeans in the 90s are circulating online”.

As such, heated debates over the allegation of NewJeans plagiarizing Jeans appeared in Korean online communities. Some netizens argued that NewJeans only took reference from Jeans, not plagiarism.

Earlier at her emergency press conference, CEO Min Hee-jin mentioned ILLIT’s plagiarism allegation, saying “They copied too much of our production formula”, and pointed out the problem of HYBE’s multi-label system. In response, ILLIT’s label Belift Lab recently sued Min Hee-jin for obstruction of business and defamation.
