As the Met Gala 2026 approaches, fashion enthusiasts aren’t just excited about extravagant outfits—they’re also buzzing about a long-standing rumor: the so-called “Met Gala curse.”
Many believe the iconic red carpet acts as a brutal test for celebrity relationships. Couples who choose the event to go public or appear together often end up parting ways shortly after. Over the years, the list of “victims” has continued to grow, making some stars hesitant about attending the gala as a couple.
One of the most talked-about examples is Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson in 2022. Their appearance made headlines, especially as Kim famously wore Marilyn Monroe’s legendary dress. The couple dominated the spotlight with affectionate moments—but just three months later, they confirmed their breakup.

Back in 2018, Shawn Mendes and Hailey Bieber (then Hailey Baldwin) looked like a fairytale couple on the red carpet. However, only months later, Hailey rekindled her romance with Justin Bieber and married him, while Mendes later clarified they were “just friends.”

In 2017, Selena Gomez and The Weeknd melted hearts with their romantic debut at the event. Yet, less than a year later, their relationship came to an end.

Another heartbreaking example is Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. The married couple appeared deeply in love at the 2019 gala, sharing sweet moments under the cameras. Shockingly, they announced their divorce just three months later, ending a decade-long relationship.

Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott also made waves at the Met Gala in both 2018 and 2019. Despite having children together, their relationship faced ongoing ups and downs before officially ending in 2022.

More recently, Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan became the latest rumored “victims.” Although they didn’t walk the carpet together at the 2024 gala, their affectionate moments inside the event caught attention. Not long after, breakup rumors began circulating.

Going further back, A$AP Rocky and Chanel Iman appeared as a glamorous engaged couple in 2014, only to call off their engagement six months later. Similarly, Jamie Campbell Bower and Lily Collins showcased gothic elegance at the 2013 gala, but their on-and-off relationship ultimately ended.
So why does this “curse” seem so convincing? Some believe the overwhelming media attention and pressure at the Met Gala can strain relationships. Others joke that attending such a lavish, high-profile event somehow “uses up” a couple’s romantic luck.
Still, not every couple falls victim. Power couples like Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, as well as Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have remained strong despite appearing at the event.

With the 2026 Met Gala just around the corner, the question remains: will any couple dare to walk those famous steps together and finally break the so-called curse—or will history repeat itself once again?
