After a disastrous 2024/25 campaign, Mason Mount has suddenly emerged as one of Manchester United’s (hereinafter referred to as MU) brightest sparks, delivering a standout performance in the 2-2 friendly draw against Fiorentina on August 9. His display has significantly boosted his chances of starting in the Premier League opener.
At Old Trafford, head coach Ruben Amorim deployed Mount as a “false nine”. The role allowed him to roam freely, drag defenders out of position, and create space for teammates. Fiorentina struck first in the 8th minute through Simon Sohm, but United equalized after Robin Gosens turned the ball into his own net.
While Mount didn’t get on the scoresheet, his influence was undeniable, boasting intelligent movement to unlock space in the final third, relentless pressing to force errors from the opposing team when United lost possession, and link-up play with sharp, accurate one-touch passes.
Amorim couldn’t hide his satisfaction, stating:
“The way Mount moves and works on the pitch is unbelievable. This was a great test for us ahead of the season. Having selection headaches is a good thing, as it means players are pushing me to change my mind every week.”
Following the arrival of attacking reinforcements Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbuemo, and Matheus Cunha, United’s frontline is packed with options. Yet, Mount’s form may prompt Amorim to reconsider his initial plans.

Next week, the squad will undergo intense fitness training before shifting to tactical analysis and finalising the XI for their Premier League 2025/26 opener against Arsenal on August 17. With his current form, Mount has a strong case to start.
United fans are also eager to witness Šeško’s debut at the Theatre of Dreams, while Mount looks poised for a remarkable “turnaround” season.
