On August 23, Manchester City hosted Tottenham Hotspur at the Etihad Stadium in Round 2 of the 2025/26 Premier League season, only to suffer a shocking 0-2 home defeat.
Tottenham struck twice in the first half to stun Manchester City. In the 35th minute, Brennan Johnson opened the scoring after a swift counterattack initiated by Richarlison, capitalizing on City’s defensive line being caught far too high. Then, deep into first-half stoppage time (45+3), João Palhinha punished a dreadful mistake from City’s goalkeeper James Trafford, calmly slotting home to double Spurs’ advantage.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, City’s attackers endured a frustrating night. Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush both squandered multiple opportunities, including a golden one-on-one situation. After the break, City pressed harder but failed to break through Tottenham’s disciplined defense, while Spurs slowed the tempo and managed the game effectively.
The loss was especially notable given City’s strong form leading up to this fixture. Since April, they had been the Premier League’s top points collectors with an unbeaten run (eight wins, two draws). Yet Tottenham once again proved to be Pep Guardiola’s nemesis. Spurs have now inflicted nine defeats on Guardiola in his managerial career — second only to Liverpool (10). In fact, City have won just four of their last 12 league encounters against Tottenham.
For Tottenham, the victory reinforces their reputation as City’s bogey team, while for Pep and his men, it is a wake-up call that their journey this season may not be as straightforward as expected.
