“Let’s go for season 2!” The “Squid Game” director, Park Hae-soo and Jung Ho-yeon return home as “Emmys” winners

The main characters of the “Squid Game” expressed their feelings after sweeping the “Emmys”.

Park Hae-soo, Jung Ho-yeon, and Hwang Dong-hyuk, directors of Netflix’s original series “Squid Game,” returned home through Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 on the afternoon of Sep 15th.

The “Squid Game” team won the “Outstanding Directing for A Drama Series” (Hwang Dong-hyuk) and the “Outstanding Lead Actor in A Drama Series” (Lee Jung-jae) at the 74th Prime Time Emmy Award (abbreviated as Emmys) held in the United States on Sep 13th (Korea Standard Time). Including winning the “Outstanding Guest Actress in A Drama Series” (Lee Yoo-mi), the “Outstanding Special Visual Effects in A Single Episode”, the “Outstanding Stunf Performance, and the “Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program” at the 74th Creative Art Emmy Awards, the Squid Game won a total of six gold golden statues at the Emmy Awards. All of them are the first Asians to receive such awards, going way beyond Korea.

Squid Game” is a series about people who participated in a mysterious survival game with 45.6 billion won in prize money which required them to risk their lives to challenge extreme games to become the final winner. It was released on Netflix in September last year and attracted attention as it became a worldwide syndrome.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who led the show, said, “We have already been in this race together for about 10 months since November last year, which means we have been together for a long enough time that we feel almost like a family. This was the last award race for Season 1, and although we didn’t win together, we came back with many meaningful awards, making it the end of a wonderful year’s journey. It was such a fun journey, and I sincerely thank everyone and fans for their support,” he said.

In addition, Jeong Ho-yeon said, “I sincerely thank the audience for loving ‘Squid Game’ and many Koreans for their support. It was such a pleasant memory to be with the director and my seniors,” she said with a bright smile.

Park Hae-soo also said, “I’m grateful, too. It was a place where I could finally step into after a year of working hard with the director. I was sad to be the last one at the accommodation yesterday, but I’m thinking that it’s only the beginning. I want to share my joy with all the viewers who support me in Korea,” he said.

On the other hand, Jeong Ho-yeon said, “I’m happy that I was also selected as the best dresser at the Emmys. I did prepare really hard,” she smilingly said.

At the awards ceremony, director Hwang Dong-hyuk tried to read his speech on the memo he had prepared, but he couldn’t finish due to lack of time. In this regard, he said, “They said I was running out of time, but I had already finished talking about what I wrote in the memo. I wanted to say thank you to my mother, but I couldn’t say it. It was supposed to be all in the subtitles. The list of people that I want to thank. But they said it didn’t appear by mistake. I’m most grateful to my mother. I want to say thank you to her for trusting and supporting my choice,” he said.

Above all, he shared, “I hope to be able to make ‘Squid Game’ season 2 and be loved like season 1. I want to participate in the race for season 2 and stand on the same stage where I previously stood at the Golden Globe and Emmy Awards. The most memorable moment during the awards ceremony was when I called my mother and she said she was crying. That is my most memorable moment,” he said, raising expectations.

Finally, director Hwang Dong-hyuk added, “Actor Lee Jung-jae told me that he has gone to Toronto. I thanked him for his hard work, and as he had been working with me for a long time, I asked him to do better with me in Season 2 and make a better work next time.”
