The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issues an official request for legal distribution of drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” to prevent copyright infringement 

The government has brought up the problem of illegal distribution of the drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” in China.

Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Park Bo-gyun) announced that the “16th Korea-China Intergovernmental Conference and Debate on Copyright Issue” would be held non-face-to-face on August 5th to discuss copyright issues in the digital era between the two countries.

During the meeting, Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will talk about the copyright infringement issue of drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” in China and ask for cooperation from the Chinese Copyright Administration to respond to copyright infringement and promote legal distribution of K-contents.

“Extraordinary Attorney Woo” has recorded more than tens of thousands of reviews on China’s largest content review site Douban. However, since the drama is not officially broadcast in China, suspicions of ‘thief viewers’ were eventually raised among Korean netizens.”

If you search “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” on China’s largest open market Taobao, you will find various products, such as jackets, skirts, and bags, claimed to be worn by Woo Young-woo in the drama. In particular, the brown cross bag, which drew attention as “Woo Young-woo’s favorite bag”, costs 1,079 yuan (about 209,067 won), which is much higher than the regular price of 174,000 won.

In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Copyright Exchange and Cooperation signed by Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Copyright Administration of China in 2006, the ‘Korea-China Intergovernmental Conference and Debate on Copyright Issue’ has been held every year.

After the meeting, the ‘16th Korea-China Copyright Forum’ will be held. Under the theme of “New Challenges for Copyright in Online Platform Environment”, the forum will examine and exchange opinions on the two governments’ legal and institutional trends and strategies for developments in the copyright industry.

Part 1 will deal with copyright issues on online platforms: △Roles and responsibilities of online service providers (OSP) in platform environments, △Copyright issues in non-replaceable token (NFT) platforms and extended virtual world (metabus) environment, and △Copyright system in China’s online environment, amendments and related precedents.

The 2nd part plans to discuss the development of the copyright industry in the online platform environment. A senior researcher at Tencent Research Institute will explain the issues of each area in China’s online platform environment, while director Kim Hyun-sook of the Korea Music Content Association is expected to explain the issue of each industry in China’s online platform environment.

An official from Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, “Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Korea and China’s diplomatic relations, this meeting is a meaningful opportunity for the two countries to further expand our cooperation in the copyright field”, adding “Based on the opinions released this time, we hoped that both countries will be able to find a system suitable for the online platform environment and a direction for the development of the copyright industry.”
