Actor Lee Kwang-soo spoke candidly about the role he takes on in the upcoming Disney+ original series The Manipulated, describing his character as so irredeemable that he nearly “spat on the script”. At a production press event held on November 3 in Yeouido’s Conrad Hotel, Seoul, Lee Kwang-soo joined fellow cast members Ji Chang-wook, Do Kyung-soo, Kim Jong-soo and Jo Yoon-su along with director Park Shin-woo.

Lee explained that his character, described as a wealthy VIP client of the series’ main antagonistic sculptor, impressed him with its hateful nature. He said: “When I looked at the script I felt like spitting on it. This is the worst character imaginable every time I read it I got annoyed, I got angry.” He added that although this is his richest character to date, he wasn’t focused on luxury, but rather on portraying someone who “looks down on others and carries high self‑esteem,” aiming to convey that attitude through his performance.

The Manipulated tells the story of an ordinary man, Tae-joong (played by Ji Chang-wook), who is unjustly caught up in a heinous crime and sent to prison only to discover that everything was orchestrated by Yohan (Do Kyung-soo), launching a high-stakes revenge narrative. The series consists of 12 episodes, with the first four episodes premiering on November 5 and two episodes released weekly thereafter.
Lee Kwang-soo’s bold comments about his character hint at a darker transformation in his career, as he embraces a villainous turn meant to push both his acting range and the audience’s discomfort boundaries.
