Lee Jung-jae, who is the first Asian actor to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for “Squid Game,” revealed a congratulatory text message from a comedian who is his close friend.
Lee Jung-jae appeared in a video interview with MBC’s “News Desk” on Sep 14th. When asked if he believed that the award is truly his, Lee Jung-jae said, “Actually, I’m still wondering if this is real life or not. However, it was a meaningful day yesterday because many people from the ‘Squid Game’ team won the awards,” he said.
Asked if there was a memorable congratulatory message, he said, “Of course, I got a call from Jung Woo-sung. Woosung is staying in Toronto (Canada) to attend the Toronto International Film Festival, but there is still a slight time difference with LA. He took and sent me a photo of him watching live on TV in his hotel room.”
He also received a text message from Yoo Jae-seok, his comrade back in the military, and said, “He doesn’t forget about his comrade and texted me, sending me his congratulatory message.”
When asked about the text sent by Yoo Jae-seok, Lee Jung-jae said, “He wrote ‘Jung-jae, this is really, really historical. Congratulations from the bottom of my heart.’” He also showed the text message screen on his cell phone, saying, “He even sent a clapping emoticon.”
At the 74th Emmy Awards held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sep 13th, Lee Jung-jae received the Outstanding Lead Actor in a TV drama category.
Lee Jung-jae and Yoo Jae-seok are best friends in the entertainment industry who have built a strong friendship during their time in the military together. Lee Jung-jae once appeared on SBS’ “Healing Camp” in the past and was asked, “I heard Yoo Jae-seok raised you on his back?” Lee then answered, “(When we were serving in the military), he always woke me up when I was sleeping at home and go with me. What a good friend. I received a lot of help from him.”
Yoo Jae-seok also certified their friendship on tvN’s “Yoo Quiz on the Block,” where Lee Jung-jae appeared as a guest in January, saying, “I really carried Lee Jung-jae to work on my back.”
