On the March 16, 2026 (KST) broadcast of Overcoming Story: While You Were Hurting, actress Lee Jae Eun opened up about why she chose to appear in a highly provocative project at just 20 years old.

Reflecting on her early fame as a beloved child actress, Lee Jae Eun candidly spoke about the severe hardships her family later faced.

She shared, “There were many temptations around my parents, and my father’s business investments completely failed. Our house was even on the verge of being seized,” describing the financial crisis that deeply impacted her life.

She continued, “That’s why I decided to star in Yellow Hair. It was an incredibly painful and difficult choice.”

Released in 1999, Yellow Hair required Lee Jae Eun to undergo a drastic image transformation, portraying a troubled young woman navigating trauma through rebellion and self-destructive behavior. While the film carried an artistic premise, it also became widely known for its controversial and provocative elements, along with its bleak narrative.

The project drew significant attention due to her bold shift in image, but it also triggered intense criticism and backlash. Audiences who had known her for her innocent child-star persona were shocked by the contrast. Although the film itself received mixed reviews, her performance stood out and earned her “Best New Actress” honors at both the Grand Bell Awards and the Blue Dragon Film Awards.

Despite the recognition, the film remains a painful chapter in her life. The controversy surrounding it affected her career path, limiting opportunities for leading roles and leaving her with emotional scars. During the show, Lee Jae Eun became visibly emotional, breaking down in tears as she revisited that difficult period, drawing sympathy from viewers.

In addition to acting, she briefly pursued music, releasing the dance track “Mask” in 2001, marking another chapter in her career beyond the screen.
