Former Wanna One member Lai Kuan Lin has once again stunned the public—this time not as an idol or actor, but as a cultural delegate and emerging film director, showcasing a life trajectory that feels closer to a movie script than reality.
In recent weeks, Lai Kuan Lin resurfaced on social media with a noticeably calm and modest appearance, sparking widespread discussion. His gentle demeanor and plain styling prompted netizens to joke that he looked like an ordinary university student, far removed from the polished K-pop idol image that once captivated fans across Asia.
This renewed attention led many to revisit footage from 2024, when Lai Kuan Lin appeared on China’s CCTV national news attending a major cultural summit in Beijing. What surprised viewers most was his role—not as a celebrity guest, but as a representative of Taiwan’s cultural community, seated among senior political figures.

At the event, Lai Kuan Lin was spotted sitting near officials including Song Tao, Director of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, drawing significant attention online. Reports stated that he participated in the exchange as a “representative figure of Taiwan’s cultural sector.” Following the broadcast, his name quickly surged to the top of Weibo’s trending searches, with netizens expressing admiration for his unexpected new path.
Reactions ranged from “He looks even cooler than during his idol days” to “It’s inspiring to see someone finish one chapter of life and pursue their passion so decisively.”
Gone was the youthful idol known for baby-soft visuals. Instead, Lai Kuan Lin appeared in a gray suit with neatly trimmed hair, a fuller build, and a composed, mature expression. The contrast was striking, reminding viewers that the 16-year-old trainee who once nervously danced on Produce 101 Season 2 had grown into a grounded 23-year-old adult.

Born in 2001, Lai Kuan Lin first rose to fame in 2017 as the so-called “chick trainee” on Mnet’s Produce 101 Season 2. Finishing seventh, he debuted with Wanna One alongside members like Kang Daniel. The group achieved explosive popularity, and Lai Kuan Lin quickly became a fan favorite and one of the group’s visual members.
However, after Wanna One’s disbandment, his career took a turbulent turn. In 2019, he filed a lawsuit against Cube Entertainment, accusing the agency of unlawfully transferring his China-based contracts to a third party. Shortly after, Lai Kuan Lin left South Korea, effectively closing the chapter on his K-pop idol career.
Back in Greater China, he transitioned into acting, appearing in dramas such as Unforgettable Love, Don’t Disturb My Study, and Love the Way You Are, maintaining steady recognition as a young actor.

Yet his most dramatic pivot came in 2021, when—at just 20 years old—Lai Kuan Lin debuted as a film director. His short film Winter & Spring Are Fighting earned five awards at the Rome Prisma Independent Film Awards, including Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Actress, proving his ambitions extended far beyond celebrity status.
In June 2024, Lai Kuan Lin quietly hinted at his retirement from the entertainment industry, writing on social media, “After much consideration, I’ve decided to change my career path. From now on, this account will be managed by my staff.” Around the same time, Cube Entertainment confirmed the termination of his contract, stating, “We support Lai Kuan Lin’s promising future endeavors.”
By June 2025, it was revealed that he had officially joined a production company as a director, marking his full transition into behind-the-scenes creative work.
“Welcome, Lai Kuan-lin.
Our first director that was born in the 2000s.
He’s passionate, energetic, sharp, and direct. He’s definitely worth looking forward to.
He has a natural talent when it comes to expression, determination to take on the world, and courage to going back to square one. He was born to be a creator. We’re looking forward to seeing him meet everyone through his works, one step at a time. It’s impossible to achieve success overnight. Before becoming an even better director, before releasing more of his own works, he will take the opportunity to experience and learn about different roles within a production team. This is what we and Lai Kuan-lin have mutually agreed on.
We and Lai Kuan-lin are grateful for every opportunity to learn from every production team. We would like to sincerely request that, if you encounter Lai Kuan-lin as he’s learning or working, at present or in the future, please do not disturb the production team or make us the main focus in the public’s eyes. Otherwise, he’d feel guilty towards that project and the project’s director.
Thank you, everyone. Have a great day.”

Today, Lai Kuan Lin stands as a rare example of a former idol who has successfully reinvented himself—not once, but multiple times. At just 23 years old, he has lived through several identities: K-pop idol, actor, award-winning director, and now cultural delegate and public servant.
For many, his journey is not just surprising—it is deeply inspiring, a reminder that stepping away from fame can sometimes lead to an even more meaningful spotlight.
