We’ve all heard it before — “They’re so unreal!”, “They look like they stepped out of a webtoon!”, “Their aura is otherworldly!” K-pop idols are often praised as if they’re some flawless beings walking among mere mortals. But let’s be honest… are their looks actually that different from the really good-looking students you probably knew in high school or college?
Yes, idols are attractive — sometimes strikingly so. But part of that “otherworldly” effect comes from professional styling, flattering lighting, makeup teams, wardrobe budgets, and hours of image curation. Strip that away, and many idols would still be beautiful… but not necessarily otherworldly.

A recent post on the Korean online community Pann, titled “When You See Things Like This, Idols Just Seem Like Regular People”, has sparked discussion among netizens. The original poster shared a photo of Hearts2Hearts member Ian, along with the caption: “Of course they’re human, but aura? That’s an overstatement — they just look like really pretty students.”
The casual remark, which downplays the often romanticized “idol aura,” has generated mixed reactions, with some agreeing that idols can appear like ordinary young people off-stage, while others noted that charisma often comes alive in performances and public appearances.
Comments on Pann:
- It’s not about Hearts2Hearts, but I agree. Not long ago, I saw some other girl group members in real life. Of course, they were pretty, but not to the point where I felt that “different species” aura people always mention in fan accounts. They just looked like pretty people.
- Honestly, with that angle and bad image quality, how could you see any “aura”?
- But if they actually stood next to you, their face would be half the size of yours.
- Yeah, idols are human too, but why do Korean women go crazy for male idols and throw money at them? When it comes to female idols, they keep saying “idols are just people, they’re no different from us,” but for male idols, they act like they’re some kind of unicorn, even spending money like a mom fan.
- Huh? They just screencapped an unflattering part. If you look at their press photos, the proportions are insane and their face is pretty — that’s a fact. Over-glorifying is one thing, but trying so hard to tear them down like this is just laughable.
So, is “otherworldly beauty” real? Or is it just the magic of styling, confidence, and clever marketing?
