They also emphasized the need for joint responses to environmental changes surrounding tobacco regulations, such as the increase in tobacco advertising and marketing through multinational media platforms and the launch of new cigarettes. In addition, they also plan to introduce the major achievements of tobacco regulation policies over the years, such as the Tobacco Harm Control Act, the expansion of smoke-free zones around daycare centers, kindergartens, elementary and middle schools, the establishment of smoking prevention guidelines in media, Tobacco Harm Control Actor content regarding analysis and disclosure of harmful ingredients, and the decrease in adult smoking rates.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the smoking rate for adults in Korea dropped from 35.1% to 17.7% in 2022.

Jeong Yeon-hee, the chief of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Health Promotion Division and the chief representative of the government delegation, said, “We will share in detail the achievements of Korea’s tobacco regulation policies with the international community and carefully examine the discussions at the conference to strengthen our domestic anti-smoking policies.”

Earlier, actress Lim Ji-yeon had a smoking scene in Netflix’s series “The Glory”, which was released in 2022, and actress-singer Suzy also smoked in “Doona!”, which premiered in October last year.
