For some celebrities, paperwork has come before the wedding march. Several Korean stars have recently chosen to register their marriages legally ahead of holding formal ceremonies, drawing public attention to the growing trend.
On February 27, actor Byun Yo-han and Tiffany Young of Girls’ Generation officially completed their marriage registration, becoming a legal couple just two months after going public with their relationship. Byun’s agency, Team Hope, stated that the pair decided to formalize their union based on deep trust and love, adding that they wished to share the news with fans first.

Regarding a wedding ceremony, the agency explained that no specific date or venue has been confirmed. The couple is reportedly considering a small, private ceremony in the form of a family worship service at a later time. Amid speculation about a possible premarital pregnancy, the agency firmly denied the rumors, clarifying that the couple had been dating with marriage in mind and simply chose to complete the legal registration before planning a ceremony.
Comedian Yoon Jung-soo also registered his marriage ahead of a wedding. In July last year, he completed paperwork with his wife, Won Ja-hyun, who is 12 years younger than him. Appearing on Channel A’s program “Best Friend Documentary: Table for 4,” Yoon explained that the decision was related to accessing medical benefits tied to pregnancy and infertility support programs. The couple later held their wedding ceremony in Seoul in November 2025 and are reportedly preparing for a child through IVF treatment.

Actress Lee Yoo-young similarly became a legal spouse before holding a wedding. In May 2024, she registered her marriage with her non-celebrity husband while also announcing her pregnancy. She welcomed her child and held her wedding ceremony a year later. After the event, Lee shared that it was a once-in-a-lifetime celebration filled with joy and gratitude, made even more meaningful by the presence of her husband and baby.

Singer Ailee and her husband Choi Si-hoon also prioritized legal registration before their wedding. Ailee explained that the move was practical, allowing them to register their home under joint ownership. She candidly shared that they had even booked a wedding venue early in their relationship, believing that if things did not work out, they could simply cancel the reservation. The couple eventually held their wedding ceremony in April last year.

As more public figures opt to formalize their unions legally before hosting traditional celebrations, the definition of marriage in the entertainment industry appears to be shifting placing practicality and personal timing ahead of convention.
