Kim Soo-hyun Only Wins Popularity Award? “Queen of Tears” Fans Furious at Baeksang Results

The fact that Kim Soo-hyun only received the popularity award at the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards has deeply disappointed fans.

On May 7, at the 60th Baeksang Arts Awards held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Kim Soo-hyun won the Prism Popularity Award along with IVE’s Ahn Yujin. The Best Actor Award – Drama category, for which Kim Soo-hyun was nominated, went to Nam Goong Min from MBC’s “My Dearest”.

While Nam Goong Min’s award for his remarkable performance in lifting the atmosphere during MBC dramas’ crisis is understandable, fans of “Queen of Tears”, a K-drama considered one of the best contents of this year, are disappointed that Kim Soo-hyun, the leading actor, only received the popularity award.

In fact, at the time when the Baeksang Arts Awards were being held, various online communities predicted Kim Soo-hyun to win a Daesang in the TV category. However, when Disney+’s “Moving” won the award, many were puzzled by the fact that Kim Soo-hyun’s role was essentially irrelevant.

On online communities, there were many posts questioning, “Why isn’t Kim Soo-hyun receiving a top award?” Some fans even expressed their frustration after ‘Moving’ won.

“Queen of Tears”, which recorded the highest viewership rating of 24.9% (Nielsen Korea cable standard), made a significant impact by breaking the record for the highest viewership rating among tvN dramas. It garnered enough attention to swallow up all other issues, drawing significant interest in major actors such as Kim Soo-hyun, Kim Ji-won, Park Sung-hoon, Lee Joo-bin, Kwak Dong0yeon, and others.

Although the Baeksang Arts Awards were fully aware of this situation, the timing was unfavorable. The Baeksang Arts Awards only evaluate works submitted from April 1 of the previous year to March 31 of the current year, but “Queen of Tears” first aired on March 9 and ended in April.

Because the evaluation was completed after only four weeks, “Queen of Tears” ended up not receiving as many awards as its performance warranted. Observations suggest that if “Queen of Tears” had premiered just a month earlier, the Daesang award might have gone to Kim Soo-hyun or “Queen of Tears” itself.
