On April 7, a production press conference for the TVING original series “Yumi’s Cells 3” (written by Song Jae-jung, directed by Lee Sang-yeob) was held at The Link Hotel in Guro-gu, Seoul. Director Lee Sang-yeob, along with actors Kim Go-eun and Kim Jae-won, attended the event.

“Yumi’s Cells 3” follows Yumi (Kim Go-eun), now a successful star writer, as a new romance begins when PD Soonrok (Kim Jae-won) enters her life. Despite her professional success, Yumi still struggles with love, while Soonrok—who appears sweet but delivers blunt truths—brings a fresh dynamic that promises new excitement.

The core of this season lies in their “love-hate” chemistry. Their constant clashes shake Yumi’s emotions, while her life begins to change because of Soonrok. Unlike her previous relationships with Goo Woong and Yoo Babi, this new dynamic hints at a different kind of romance, raising expectations among viewers.

Having led the series through three seasons, Kim Go-eun shared, “‘Yumi’s Cells’ was my first time leading a drama like this. The large amount of screen time was physically demanding, but instead of feeling pressured, I focused on managing my stamina.”

Four years have passed since Season 2. During that time, Kim Go-eun explored various genres, but she revisited Seasons 1 and 2 before filming to reconnect with Yumi. “I have a strong ‘comedy cell’ in me. I love making people laugh, and since Yumi is such a comic character, I had a lot of fun acting,” she explained, noting that the role didn’t feel particularly difficult.

She also reflected on the significance of the series in her acting career: “It feels like the second chapter of my life has opened. In my 20s, I struggled and worked hard, but now in my 30s, I’m starting a new chapter with the wisdom I’ve gained. Playing Yumi made me truly happy.”

Following Ahn Bo-hyun in Season 1 and Park Jinyoung in Season 2, Kim Jae-won joins as the new male lead. He said, “It’s an honor to join a project that has received so much love. Since Soonrok is a beloved character among original fans, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel pressure.”

He added, “I did my best to bring Soonrok to life. As a newcomer, this is my first major role, so I learned a lot while being guided by my more experienced co-star.” He also expressed excitement about portraying the “younger man” archetype from the original work.

Director Lee Sang-yeob explained the casting choice: “Even though he doesn’t have a long career, he has shown versatility in roles. When I met him, he had a striking presence. Soonrok in the original work has a sharp, suit-wearing image, and Kim Jae-won matched that vision.”

With many “cell” characters appearing in the series, both actors shared their favorites. Kim Go-eun laughed, saying, “I like the ‘naughty cell,’ but I also like the love cell.” Kim Jae-won chose Soonrok’s “rational cell,” noting that it fits the character’s personality, while teasing that Soonrok’s “naughty cell” is particularly strong.

When asked about their own growth, Kim Go-eun said her “love cell” has become stronger, while Kim Jae-won also picked love as the cell that has grown the most through the project.

“Yumi’s Cells 3” will premiere on April 13, releasing two episodes every Monday at 6 PM on TVING.
