Eight years have passed since the tragic death of former SPECTRUM member Kim Dong Yoon.

The late singer passed away unexpectedly on July 27, 2018, at just 20 years old. His death came only two months after officially making his debut in the K-pop industry, leaving fans and fellow artists in shock.

At the time, his agency, WYNN Entertainment, announced the heartbreaking news through the group’s official fan café. The company stated, “The bereaved family, the members of SPECTRUM, and all of our staff are mourning deeply following this sudden and tragic loss.” In accordance with his family’s wishes, the funeral was held privately. An autopsy was conducted to determine the cause of death, but the specific findings were never made public.

Kim Dong Yoon first gained attention in 2017 after appearing on JTBC’s survival audition program Mix Nine. His strong performance skills and warm visuals earned him considerable recognition, and he finished in 21st place in the male rankings while building a loyal fanbase. In May 2018, he officially debuted as a member of the seven-member boy group SPECTRUM with their first album Be Born and the title track “Light It Up.” During the group’s debut showcase, he expressed his ambitions, saying that Mix Nine had helped him improve significantly and that he hoped to study songwriting so he could create music with his fellow members and help the group become more widely known.

What made the news even more devastating was that Kim Dong Yoon had interacted cheerfully with fans through a live broadcast on his personal account just one day before his passing. The sudden loss left his family, fans, and the public in deep sorrow. His younger sister also shared a heartfelt message on social media, asking people to send him a final farewell and wish him happiness in heaven.

Later that same year, in September, the remaining members of SPECTRUM honored him by releasing the memorial song “Dear My,” a track that Kim Dong Yoon had personally helped write before his passing. The group also continued performing while intentionally leaving his position and vocal parts empty on stage as a tribute to their late bandmate. However, due to financial difficulties faced by their agency during the COVID-19 pandemic, SPECTRUM officially ended group activities in July 2020, with each member moving on to pursue separate paths.
