Taiwanese primetime drama star Kerry Hsu once dominated the 8 p.m. television slot, but her flourishing career was abruptly halted by a devastating car accident in 2021. According to local reports, although her face did not suffer major external injuries, the collision severed her eyelid, leaving her right eye with only 0.2 vision and unable to close properly. The damage was so severe that doctors warned of possible blindness.

After undergoing her first two to three surgeries with no visible improvement, Kerry Hsu fell into deep despair. She was later referred to a leading ophthalmology specialist, who diagnosed her condition as critical and requiring long-term surgical treatment.
Each operation reportedly cost 300,000 RMB (over 44,000 USD), and she had to return to the operating table every six months. After more than 10 surgeries over five years, her eyesight gradually recovered to near its previous condition.

Kerry Hsu shared that she was fortunate to be born into a financially stable family. Her father, a company director with assets reportedly worth hundreds of millions of TWD, covered the enormous medical expenses. Without that support, she admitted, saving her eyesight would have been nearly impossible.

During her five-year recovery journey, Kerry Hsu chose not to surrender to fate. She earned professional certificates in Chinese and Western cuisine, baking, and even took up scuba diving. Preparing for any outcome, she said she wanted alternative career skills in case she could no longer return to acting. Later, she also learned horseback riding, pole dancing, Wing Chun, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu to strengthen herself physically all with the hope of one day resuming her work in the entertainment industry.

Once known as a screen “goddess,” Kerry Hsu’s story has now become one of resilience and determination, proving that even in the face of potential blindness, she refused to let tragedy define her future.
