On March 4, Ha Yerin attended a press conference for Bridgerton Season 4 at Community House Masil in Myeongdong, Seoul. During the event, she revealed how she landed the role of Sophie Baek, the female lead of the upcoming season.

A 24-Hour Audition While Visiting Mom

Ha explained that, unlike Korea’s audition system, she submitted a self-tape overseas. “I’m not sure how it works in Korea, but we usually film a self-tape and send it in,” she said. “I recorded the designated scenes and submitted them. Then I got a call from my agent while I was visiting my mom in Korea.”

Her mother lives in Taean, and Ha happened to be there at the time. “I was grocery shopping at Lotte Mart when my agent called and asked, ‘You know Bridgerton, right?’ Of course, I said yes. Then they told me to submit another tape within 24 hours,” she recalled. She quickly filmed additional scenes including a lake scene and sent them in.

Late-Night Zoom With Luke Thompson

Ha Yerin was later asked to do a chemistry read with Luke Thompson, who plays Benedict Bridgerton. “Because of the time difference, we did the Zoom call at 11 p.m. Korea time. I was nervous all day,” she shared with a laugh. A few days later, while having brunch with her mother in Gangnam, she received the life-changing call confirming she had been cast as Sophie Baek.

Bridgerton is Netflix’s hit period romance series set in 19th-century British high society. Season 4 centers on the free-spirited Benedict Bridgerton and his fateful encounter with the mysterious “Lady in Silver” at a masquerade ball who is later revealed to be Sophie Baek, a maid navigating love, identity, and class barriers.
