In a heartfelt episode of tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” aired on September 3, singer Kangnam shared an emotional story about his father’s health battle — and the unwavering support of his wife, Olympic gold medalist Lee Sang-hwa.
“It was sudden,” Kangnam said. “We were all shocked, but Sang-hwa was the first to react. She contacted my dad right away, took care of his meals, and showed incredible knowledge about health. She even paid for his hospital bills.”
Kangnam recalled how deeply moved his father was:
“I’m not sure why he kept crying, but whenever he saw Sang-hwa, he would tear up. She’s my wife, but at times, she feels like a mom because of how much she takes care of everyone.”
Lee Sang-hwa explained the extent of her care, revealing that Kangnam’s father had issues with both liver and heart health:
“I made time in my schedule to visit him in Japan. Since he loves Korean food, I vacuum-packed meals and sent them over. I cooked everything with low sodium due to his condition. Thankfully, he’s recovered significantly and is doing well now.”
The couple also shared a humorous yet touching story about their first family meeting, marked by awkward tension and nervous laughter. Kangnam revealed that his mother had strongly opposed their relationship, even telling Lee:
“You’re a national athlete. Why are you seeing my son? You can meet someone better.”
Lee Sang-hwa confirmed: “She actually pulled me aside and said, ‘Please stop seeing Kangnam.’” Kangnam added with a laugh:
“During the family meeting, my mom kept poking me with a fork under the table, worried I’d say something dumb. Sang-hwa was kicking me too. By the end, my shins were swollen.”
Despite the rocky start, Kangnam and Lee Sang-hwa tied the knot in 2019. The two first met on the SBS variety show Law of the Jungle and have since become one of the entertainment industry’s most admired couples, known for their candid personalities and strong partnership.
