K-pop Idols Follow Taylor Swift in IFPI Global Artist Chart: SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, TXT, and NewJeans Among Top 10

Four K-pop artists made it to the Top 10 of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI)’s 2023 Global Artist Chart alongside Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Drake,…

Wrapping up a year filled with success, marked by her 4th win in the Album of the Year category at the 66th Grammy Awards, it’s no wonder Taylor Swift also tops IFPI’s 2023 Global Artist Chart. Taylor Swift secured the No. 1 position for the fourth time following 2014, 2019, and 2022.

Following Taylor Swift, SEVENTEEN ranked 2nd, Stray Kids ranked 3rd, TXT ranked 7th, and NewJeans ranked 8th.

IFPI, with over 8,000 record companies worldwide as members, releases a list annually summarizing trends in the record industry. Among these, the Global Artist Chart is considered one of the objective indicators that gauges the most popular artists of the year by combining physical album sales, digital song downloads, and audio/video streaming figures.

In 2022, BTS ranked 2nd, SEVENTEEN ranked 6th, and Stray Kids ranked 7th on the chart.

SEVENTEEN, who first entered the Top 10 of this chart (9th place) in 2021, has been climbing the ranks every year. Following their 6th place in 2022, they rose to 2nd place this time.

SEVENTEEN set a record last year by surpassing 16 million albums in cumulative sales for the year. They achieved a career high by consecutively making hits with their 10th mini-album ‘FML’ and 11th mini-album ‘SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN.’

Stray Kids also continued their successful streak. After entering the chart for the 1st time at 7th place in 2022, they reached the top 3 within a year, achieving their best record yet. Especially, Stray Kids not only was the only 4th gen K-pop group to make it to the Top 10 on the chart last year but also this year, they achieved the highest ranking among 4th gen K-pop groups and solidified their reputation.

Stray Kids achieved consecutive No. 1 rankings on Billboard 200 with their two albums released last year, securing the top spot for four consecutive times. Especially with the latest title track ‘LALALALA’, they succeeded in entering Billboard Hot 100, becoming the second K-pop boy group after BTS and the first 4th gen K-pop boy group to do so. Recently, they won ‘Group of the Year’ at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards.

TXT and NewJeans entered this chart for the first time since their debut.

TXT proved their strong local popularity by reaching No. 1 on Billboard 200 with their 5th mini-album ‘The Name Chapter: Temptation’ last year. They also became the headliner for the music festival ‘Lollapalooza Chicago’ as the first K-pop group, and they were invited to perform at the ‘2023 MTV Video Music Awards,’ making them the K-pop artist to perform at this awards show in the shortest period after debut.

NewJeans created a global sensation and left many records in 2023. With their second EP ‘Get Up,’ they topped Billboard 200 and had five songs (‘OMG,’ ‘Ditto,’ ‘Super Shy,’ ‘ETA,’ ‘Cool With You’) enter Hot 100. ‘Get Up’ was recorded as the fifth best-selling physical album in the U.S. last year among K-pop female artists. NewJeans also received an award at the Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) in the shortest time after debut among K-pop artists (1 year and 4 months).
