K-Drama ‘Queen Of Tears’ Faces Backlash for Appearance of Starbucks Cup

The latest episode of Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Ji Won’s new drama "Queen of Tears" left international viewers let down due to a PPL.

Following the journey of Hong Hae In (played by Kim Ji Won) and her husband Baek Hyun Woo (played by Kim Soo Hyun), “Queen of Tears” delves into the challenges of their marriage amidst their involvement in Queens Group and Department Store. With a stellar cast and crew, “Queen of Tears” has gained swift popularity, drawing in high ratings with just 4 episodes into its run.

While the drama has been receiving positive reviews for its engaging storyline and the cast’s performances, Episode 4 stirred a controversy, particularly among international viewers. Viewers noticed a scene where Hyun Woo is seen sipping from a Starbucks cup.

The appearance of Starbucks immediately raised eyebrows due to the ongoing global boycott against the coffee chain amid the Israel – Palestine conflict.

While Starbucks wasn’t explicitly listed by BDS, its involvement in certain controversies, including a lawsuit against its own employees for expressing solidarity with Palestine, caused the boycott.

While some pointed out that certain international branches of Starbucks operate independently, with no direct ties to the parent company, the disappointment among “Queen of Tears” international viewers persists.

However, it’s worth noting that the scenes in question were likely filmed before the boycott gained traction.
