On September 12, Korean media reported that Jung Dong-won, the 2007-born trot prodigy often dubbed the “nation’s musical genius,” is under investigation for driving without a license.
The singer allegedly drove a car in Hadong, Gyeongnam in 2023, when he was just 16 years old. According to Korean traffic law, drivers must be at least 18 to obtain a license.

This is not his first traffic-related controversy. Earlier in 2023, Jung Dong-won was caught riding a motorcycle without a license on the Dongbu expressway. At the time, he avoided prosecution because it was his first violation and he was a minor. But this time, consequences may be more serious—he faces up to 10 months in prison or a fine of 3 million won ($2,200).
His agency argued that he only drove for 10 minutes out of curiosity on a quiet rural road and is now deeply regretful.

What makes this case particularly shocking is how it came to light. In March 2025, Jung Dong-won’s phone was stolen by a group of criminals who discovered a video of him driving illegally. They attempted to blackmail him for 500 million won ($380,000), and Jung Dong-won even paid 100 million won ($75,000) before reporting the crime to police.
The gang was eventually arrested, and Jung Dong-won was initially treated as a victim. However, when police examined the stolen phone, they discovered evidence of his unlicensed driving and referred the case to prosecutors in June.
Thus, Jung Dong-won’s status changed from blackmail victim to criminal defendant.

The scandal has ignited heated discussions on Korean online forums. Fans expressed disappointment, noting that Jung Dong-won, once adored for his innocent image and powerful trot vocals, has now been caught breaking the law twice before turning 18.
Traffic-related scandals have historically been career-ending for Korean celebrities, casting doubt on Jung Dong-won’s future.
Born March 19, 2007, Jung Dong-won rose to fame in 2020 on Mr. Trot Season 1, winning hearts with his boyish charm and mature vocal talent. He has also pursued acting and debuted under the stage name JD1 in the AI idol market.
Now, as he faces legal penalties and public backlash, the once-celebrated prodigy’s career hangs by a thread.
