Johnny Depp “I didn’t want to destroy Amber Heard, I just wanted the truth”… $1 million will be donated to charities
While the libel suit between Johnny Depp (59) and his ex-wife Amber Heard (36) was settled with a settlement of $1 million (about 1.3 billion), Johnny Depp’s side expressed their feelings.
A source close to Johnny Depp told the entertainment media outlet People on Dec 19th (local time), “He has always said he wasn’t looking to destroy her. He said it wasn’t about money. He just wanted the truth.“
Amber Heard said on Instagram that day, “After a great deal of deliberation, I have made a very difficult decision to settle the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia.“
She added, “It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I defended my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed.“
In a 2018 article in The Washington Post, Amber Heard revealed that she had been subjected to domestic violence. Although she did not specify Johnny Depp’s name, he sued her for defamation, claiming that he could know who she was referring to and that she had damaged his reputation. Eventually, in early June, Amber Heard lost the trial against Johnny Depp and had to pay $10.35 million (about 13.4 billion won).
However, the court also required Johnny Depp to pay $2 million (about 2.6 billion won), so Amber Heard had to pay a total of $8.35 million (about 10.8 billion won).
In the end, Amber Heard agreed to pay Johnny Depp $1 million.
Depp’s attorneys Benjamin Chew and Camille Vazquez told People, “We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who made clear throughout this process that his priority was about bringing the truth to light.“
They went on to say, “The jury’s unanimous decision and the resulting judgment in Mr. Depp’s favor against Ms. Heard remain fully in place. The payment of $1 million will be donated to charities.“
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp met through the 2009 film “The Rum Diary” then developed into lovers. They got married in February 2015 and divorced in August 2016. Later, they got into a “mud fight” through the lawsuit over domestic violence.
