According to Sohu, producer Charles Heung’s wife, Tiffany Chen, recalled witnessing Jet Li and his daughter nearly losing their lives in the South Asian tsunami. Chen revealed that Li clung desperately to a pillar outside their hotel to survive, while his young daughter was swept away by the waves before being rescued by staff.
The family had originally planned to travel to Phuket, Thailand, but changed their destination to the Maldives. When the tsunami hit, Li was on the beach with his daughter and the nanny, with water rising to chest level. Holding his daughter tightly, he also saw her and the nanny dragged by the current, while his wife, Nina Li Chi, was trapped inside their hotel room, escaping only at the last moment.

After the disaster, survivors faced dire conditions, including limited access to clean water, before returning to Hong Kong. The ordeal deeply affected Li, who began to devote himself to spiritual practice, charitable work, and a redefined view of life and death.
In August, the 62-year-old actor was hospitalized after doctors found a lump in his neck. He later reassured fans in a Weibo video, explaining that the tumor was benign and sharing stories of his three brushes with death: the 2004 tsunami, a near-fatal fall on the set of Fearless, and severe altitude sickness in Tibet that nearly cost him his life.

Li also recalled his 2013 thyroid surgery, which left him fearful of losing or permanently altering his voice. Today, he stresses that mental health is just as important as physical well-being, emphasizing the need for inner peace and stability.
Born in Beijing in 1963, Jet Li remains one of China’s most iconic martial arts actors, producer, and philanthropist. His legacy includes unforgettable portrayals of Wong Fei Hung and Huo Yuanjia, as well as roles in films such as Hero, Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, The Warlords, The Sorcerer and the White Snake, and Mulan.
