Jennie (BlackPink) Becomes a Laughingstock Due To Acting Award

Jennie (BlackPink) Wins Acting Award for Controversial Film The Idol, Shocking Netizens

Jennie has reached another milestone in her star-studded career by winning the Best Actress in an International Series award at the SEC Awards 2024 in Brazil.

The SEC Awards (formerly known as Séries em Cena Awards) is a Brazilian award program established in 2019, honoring influential figures in film, television, music, and the Internet.

Jennie was recognized by the SEC Awards for her role as Dyanne, an ambitious backup dancer, in HBO’s 18+ series The Idol. This marks the BlackPink rapper’s acting debut.

The award organizers announced this on their official Twitter account. Following this, BlackPink fan accounts such as Worldwide Blink and BlackPink Global posted congratulations to the 1996-born star.

However, most netizens found it unreasonable, even ridiculous, for Jennie to receive an acting award. They pointed out that Jennie’s character in The Idol was a supporting role, making it inappropriate for her to win a leading actress award. Additionally, some revealed that this category was fan-voted. Jennie’s screen time in the film was limited, and the film itself was criticized as trash.

Netizens commented: “I thought this was a meaningful award but it’s just a fan vote,” “Ridiculous! It’s just a fan poll,” “The Idol is a horrible film. A waste of time and money,” “What is this? I bet even Jennie feels guilty accepting the award,” “I thought the jury was bad, but it turns out it was the fans. If it were for a new actress award, it would be acceptable,” “Blinks have put her in a bad situation with this setup. A perfect example of killing someone with love,” “Best Actress? You must be joking,” “This doesn’t help Jennie; it only makes her a laughingstock,” “Fans should only vote for popularity awards. Leave acting awards to the jury”…

The Idol is set in the music industry, focusing on the complex relationship between a modern-day cult leader (The Weeknd) and a rising pop idol (Lily-Rose Depp).

The series premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 and officially aired a month later. The show lasted only five episodes but stirred controversy for its excessive, unnecessary explicit scenes. International media bluntly labeled The Idol as trash.

Despite heavy promotion, Jennie’s role as Dyanne had pitifully little screen time, measured in minutes. In the first three episodes, Jennie sparked controversy with provocative dance moves, revealing outfits, and meaningless lines. By episode four, her acting received positive feedback from the audience. In the final episode, she appeared for just over a minute.

Korean and international media believe Jennie’s presence in the series was merely to attract viewers, as her character had little impact on the plot.

Koreaboo noted that Jennie seemed to be exploited. The news site also expressed regret for the Kpop idol’s participation in a project that took a sexually exploitative direction and abused women.

Rolling Stone commented that Jennie was merely a “stunt” by the producers to promote the series.

In reality, this strategy by the production team was effective. The Idol garnered 913,000 views worldwide on its first day, becoming the most-watched show on HBO. The series also topped the online interaction chart for TV shows, surpassing programs on established platforms like Netflix and NBC.

Additionally, according to Television Stats, The Idol surpassed other hit shows such as The Last of Us and Wednesday to claim the number one spot for online interaction for over 30 consecutive days since January 2022, thanks to Jennie’s popularity.
