Korean netizens are expressing deep admiration for Japanese idol Hashimoto Nanami after her life story resurfaced online, highlighting her decision to retire from the entertainment industry at the peak of her popularity immediately after paying off her family’s debt.
Hashimoto Nanami, who retired in 2017 at just 23 years old, entered the idol industry not for fame or luxury, but out of necessity. During her non-celebrity days, her family was burdened with significant debt, prompting her to challenge herself to become an idol in hopes of achieving financial stability for her loved ones.

After debuting, Nanami quickly rose to the top, gaining attention for her striking visuals and strong presence, eventually becoming one of the most popular members of her group. Despite her success, her true dream had never changed.
From elementary school, Nanami consistently said she wanted to become a civil servant. Her reason was simple yet heartbreaking: even without high earnings, it would allow her to live a normal, stable life. At the time, her homeroom teacher scolded her for “having no dreams,” unaware of the financial hardships she was enduring.
Nanami later revealed that she was pushed to her mental limits. She poured all her scholarships into tuition, worked every part-time job imaginable, and even became a hair model because she couldn’t afford haircuts receiving a short hairstyle for free. She kept her hair short afterward simply because growing it out required money she didn’t have.

Through relentless effort, Nanami eventually succeeded in paying off all her family’s debt. When she announced her graduation from the group, the members reportedly treated her like a daughter, showing how deeply respected she was within the team.
One of the most emotional moments came when she received a letter from her mother, which read: “Hatsuro received a four-year scholarship, so his tuition is free. He said he can cover his living expenses with part-time work. Nanami, I’m really sorry for everything until now. Please don’t overdo it anymore and do what you want to do. Hatsuro has grown a lot and can now live on his own to some extent.”
With her responsibility fulfilled, Nanami chose to step away from fame to pursue a life she truly wanted. In recent updates, it was revealed that she graduated from art school with a degree in spatial design and, in 2024, joined Sony Music, where she now works planning and producing music videos and events.

Korean netizens reacted with overwhelming respect and emotion:
- Wow, she’s so cool.
- That’s incredibly impressive.
- She was so popular leaving all that behind couldn’t have been easy.
- Her dream really was just a normal, stable life.
- Not just her, but her family is amazing too.
- They didn’t try to live off her fame. That’s a good family.
- She really lived her life to the fullest.
Many also noted her resemblance to other famous idols at first glance, while others emphasized how rare it is to see someone walk away from success so decisively once their personal goal is achieved.
Nanami’s story has resonated deeply, standing as a powerful reminder that success isn’t always about staying at the top but about knowing when you’ve done enough.
