IU revealed a behind-the-scenes story during the script reading for the movie “Broker”.
The latest broadcast of MBC’s “Let’s Go Video Travel” released on June 5th featured an interview with the cast of “Broker”, who attended the 75th Cannes International Film Festival in France.
The interview took place with the presence of Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won, IU (Lee Ji-eun), and Lee Joo-young. The main topic was about the relationship between Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda and the cast members of “Broker”, how it is and when it started.
Song Kang-ho said, “I really enjoy and respect director Koreeda’s works.” He explained, “(My relationship with the director) started at the Busan Film Festival 7-8 years ago, when I heard about his work.”
Kang Dong-won continued, “(Director Koreeda) did a promotion in Korea, and he said that he wanted to do it with actor Kang Dong-won, so we met.” He added with a laugh, “We had so much fun working together.”
IU then said, “First of all, there were many times when I got nervous, and controlling such feelings was the most difficult thing for me”. She confessed, “When the cameras were turned on, they immediately transformed into real Sang-hyun and Dong-soo, so I was very nervous”, adding, “But I think I was much more nervous before I met them two.”
When asked, “When was the moment that you felt relieved?”, IU recalled, “It was at the script reading when I greeted the seniors for the first time and did the scene where I sing the lullaby, which was also shown in the trailer. I carefully sang it at the script reading and then everyone applauded, I got so shy and my face turned red.”
When IU said, “They made me feel more relieved and I was really thankful”, Kang Dong-won smiled brightly and added, “I think I clapped right after she sang. Her live singing was so nice.”
In fact, the scene of IU’s lullaby in “Broker” was only added after director Koreeda cast IU. Earlier, director Kore-eda revealed, “I wanted to hear Lee Ji-eun singing so much that I just added the scene without realizing it.”
“Broker” is the first Korean film written and directed by Koreeda himself. It depicts the process of people who met through a child abandoned in the baby box becoming a family.
