IU, who debuted as a singer at the age of 16, steps on the Red Carpet of the Cannes Film Festival as actress Lee Ji-eun right after turning 30

Singer IU will appear at the Cannes Film Festival for the first time as actress Lee Ji-eun.

The 75th Cannes International Film Festival will hold its opening ceremony to begin a spectacular festival on May 17th. This year’s Cannes Film Festival has sent more love calls to Korean films than ever before. Therefore, many filmmakers and Korean stars will be seen gathering at Cannes.

In particular, much attention is being paid to IU, who stars as a lead in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s movie “Broker”, which was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival this year. “Broker” is the first Korean film Hirokazu Kore-eda directed and it depicts the story of people who get associated with baby boxes, which allow babies to be left anonymously to be cared for by others. IU plays the role of a mother who left her child in the baby box but then went back to find the baby. IU, who debuted as a singer at the age of 16 and received huge love from the public, will attend the Cannes Film Festival as actress Lee Ji-eun right after celebrating her 30th birthday on May 16th.

IU

IU, who debuted as an actress in the drama “Dream High” in 2011, has continued to practice acting and proved her acting skills through different kinds of works, such as weekend dramas, miniseries, etc. In particular, she took on the role of Lee Ji-an in the 2018 drama “My Mister”. Director Hirokazu Kore-eda once shared that he cried at every scene of “My Mister” where IU appeared so he decided to cast her. Viewers who have watched “My Mister” have no choice but to agree with his words.

Even veteran actor Song Kang-ho, who met IU for the first time through “Broker”, also praised her. Song Kang-ho recalled some memorable moments and said, “There is a scene in the movie where Lee Ji-eun talks with the detectives. I watched that evening scene. I know Lee Ji-eun has the techniques as an actress but I remember how I was so amazed by her expressions that convey her sincerity and the ways she delivered emotions. Other scenes were also well-done, but I especially liked complex scenes where she showed her emotions and feelings. So I called her out separately and complimented her. Kang Dong-won has never received any praise from me. I don’t often do that”. Therefore, movie fans are looking forward to seeing what kind of acting IU, who appeared at the Cannes Film Festival at the age of 30, will show in “Broker”.

Broker

Meanwhile, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Broker” and Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” were selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. “Decision to Leave” is a Korean film that director Park Chan-wook made after “The Handmaiden”. It depicts the story that happens when a detective, who investigates a murder in the mountain, suspects and falls for the deceased’s wife. Park Hae-il plays detective Hae-jun, while Tang Wei appears in this work as Seo-rae, the wife of the deceased. In addition, “Hunt”, the movie directed by word star Lee Jung-jae, was also invited to the non-competitive Midnight Screening section. “Hunt” is a spy-action film in which agents Park Pyung-ho (Lee Jung-jae) and Kim Jung-do (Jung Woo-sung) face the truth while chasing a North Korean spy chief.
