On May 16, IU celebrated her birthday by hosting a special group viewing event for fans at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall Theater 5. Together with fans, she watched episodes of the MBC Friday-Saturday drama “Perfect Crown.”
Before leaving the theater after the screening, IU expressed gratitude to Uaena, her official fandom, for attending the event. She then carefully opened up about her recent thoughts.
“I think it’s because I’m currently preparing an album while the drama is also nearing its end, but lately I’ve been thinking that I need to do better and become more responsible,” she shared.
“Perfect Crown” is a fictional drama imagining a constitutional monarchy in a modern-day South Korea that does not exist in reality. Even before its broadcast, the drama attracted explosive attention simply because of the pairing between IU and Byeon Woo Seok.
However, after airing, the series became embroiled in multiple controversies. Although it was promoted as a fantasy drama, viewers continuously pointed out historical inaccuracies throughout the broadcast. The drama also faced criticism over noticeable plot inconsistencies, acting controversies involving the cast, directing criticism, and more recently, suspicions regarding alleged Northeast Project distortions.
While IU did not directly mention the controversies by name, she indirectly expressed her feelings by saying, “I should have done better. If I disappointed you even a little or showed any shortcomings, it’s all my fault.”
She continued, “I will move forward with greater responsibility and do better.” IU added, “I want to become someone Uaena can be proud of, so I’ve been thinking a lot lately. Really, everything could have been resolved if I had simply done better. Because I’m someone who receives so much love from all of you, I’ll become even more responsible and work harder.”
The singer-actress also promised to improve herself further moving forward. “I want to become an IU who can show everyone an even better side of myself. I’ll truly live without wasting a single moment,” she said. “Even so, I still have many shortcomings, so I’m deeply thankful that you continue to love and support me.”
IU further emphasized that she sincerely listens to feedback from fans and the public. “I believe everything you say has a reason behind it and is something I should accept,” she explained. “If there are areas where I’m lacking, please continue telling me. Please scold and push me more, because I want to listen carefully and become a better person moving forward.”
Finally, IU concluded by once again apologizing to fans while expressing gratitude for their continued support. “I want to show you better sides of myself, so I’m sorry for the areas where I still fall short. Even so, thank you so much for continuing to give me opportunities and viewing me with affection. I’ll truly work harder and do better,” she said warmly.
