IU, BIBI and Taeyeon: Female Solo Artists Conquer Music Charts

The power of solo female singers have recently been shown on Korean music charts.

On February 5th, Genie Music announced the results of the weekly music chart for the first week of February (Jan 29-Feb 4). IU’s comeback song “Love Wins All” reportedly topped the chart and has remained on top for three consecutive weeks. IU’s “Love Wins All” is a pre-released song from her 6th mini-album “The Winning,” released on February 20, and has been receiving great reviews from the public.

In the fourth week of February (Feb. 19-25), a new female soloist was on the throne. BIBI won first place with “Bam Yang Gang.” This is a song written, composed, and arranged by Jang Ki-ha and has a bright yet sad vibe.

IU and BIBI’s No. 1 places on music charts prove that female solo artists have become the center of the music industry these days. In addition, female solo artists’ strides were highlighted in the fourth week of February, with BIBI’s “Bam Yang Gang” and IU’s “Love Wins All,” along with Taeyeon’s “To.X” at 5th place. “To.X” was released in November last year, and received great attention in that it was Taeyeon’s comeback song in a year and nine months. It ranked at the top of major music charts upon release.

If the top songs on the music charts last year were filled with girl group songs with the activities of girl group such as IVE, NewJeans, LE SSERAFIM, and (G)I-DLE, the songs of female soloists began to rise to the top after Taeyeon’s “To.X.”

“IU and Taeyeon were originally strong in music, so aside from the two, the discovery of BIBI stands out,” a K-pop official said. “There are many factors that contributed to BIBI’s career high with ‘Bam Yang Gang’, but the public opinion is that it is thanks to it is public-friendly, which is different from her previous works. In this part, we can derive the commonality between BIBI, IU, and Taeyeon that they performed lyrical songs with a clear tone and outstanding singing ability.”

Amid the strong music battle of female solo singers, Red Velvet’s Wendy coming back on the 12th of this month, Oh My Girl’s YooA on the 14th, and Apink’s Kim Nam-joo on the 18th are also raising expectations.

Another K-pop official said, “There has been a craze for “easy listening” in the music industry recently, and female solo singers, especially with singing styles that match “easy listening,” are at the top of the charts in line with the trend.” “If the upcoming songs of female solo singers continue to do well, the strong performance of female solo singers will continue in the long run.”
