IU, Bae Doona, and other actresses that represent Korea at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival: who has the most impressive career?

The 75th Cannes Film Festival concluded with a huge success for Korea, and attention is being paid to the actresses in Korean-speaking movies there.

Hirokazu Koreeda’s “Broker”, Lee Jung Jae “Hunt”, and Park Chan Wook’s “Decision to Leave” are three Korean-speaking movies that premiered at the 2022 Cannes International Film Festival. Here, alongside the directors, actresses that stars in these movies have also entered the limelight.

Across her career, Bae Doona also earned various achievements, including the 2002 Baeksang’s Best Actress Award when she was 23 years old. She also won Best Actress at various other awards shows, including the Director’s Cut Awards at the age of 27, and the 2010 Tokyo Sports Film Awards with the Japanese film “Air Doll”.

IU (Lee Ji Eun)

IU is the least experienced actress in this list

“Broker” is IU’s second cinematic project after the 2019 movie “Shades of The Heart”, making this idol-actress the least experienced on this list.

Despite having made her acting debut back in 2011, it was not until 2018, after starring in “My Mister”, that IU was recognized. She was nominated for Baeksang twice with “My Mister” and the 2019 series “Hotel Del Luna”, but failed to win both times due to tough competition.

For now, IU is a stable commercial actress, but she was pretty much a rookie in the cinematic field, and is still slowly proving herself.

In “Broker”, IU transforms into So Young, a single mother who wants to find her child, which is a completely different image compared to her previous work. It was impressive that IU was attending Cannes this early in her career.

Lee Joo Young

Another actress in “Broker” is Lee Joo Young, who played female investigator Lee. Like IU, Lee Joo Young took up acting in 2011, and since then, she has been climbing up from super minor roles.

While the actress did earn attention for roles in K-dramas like “Weightlifting Kim Bok Joo” and “Itaewon Class”, it was her cinematic projects that truly shined.

In 2016, she caught the eyes of critics via appearances in “Jane” and “A Quiet Dream”, and has since been nominated at Baeksang Arts Awards, Buil Film Awards, and Wildflower Film Awards.

Lee Joo Young earned her first leading role in a movie back in 2020 with “Baseball Girl”, which got her nominated for Best Actress at Buil Film Awards, and Best New Actress at Blue Dragon Film Awards. While the actresses came home empty-handed both times, she was still a prospective actress who will surely prove herself further in the near future.

Tang Wei

After the remarkable success of “Late Autumn” in 2010, Tang Wei finally returned to the Korean acting world. Even more impressively, this comeback of Tang Wei is in “Decision To Leave”, a project from famous director Park Chan Wook.

Despite not being Korean, Tang Wei made history as the first foreigner to win Best Actress at Baeksang with the 2010 movie “Late Autumn”.

The same project also brought her similar titles at Busan Film Critics Awards, Korean Association Of Film Critics Awards, Cine21 Awards, and KOFRA Film Awards. In fact, if the number of prizes is considered, Tang Wei would be on the same level as Bae Doona, who shares the same age.

Seeing that “Decision To Leave” is directed by the ever-reliable director Park Chan Wook, it would most certainly be watch worthy, and the same can be said for Tang Wei’s appearance.
