“Isn’t he the best?” Kim Soo-hyun is “Queen of Tears” writer Park Ji-eun’s PICK for a reason

Once again, Kim Soo-hyun impresses, as expected. He has once again spread the wings of "Romantic Comedy King"

Demonstrating perfect synergy with writer Park Ji-eun for the third time, he continues to thrill viewers every weekend night. Not only has he captured both ratings and topicality, but Kim Soo-hyun’s presence is also becoming more prominent.

Kim Soo-hyun is currently performing passionately in tvN’s Saturday-Sunday drama “Queen of Tears” (written by Park Ji-eun, directed by Jang Young-woo and Kim Hee-won). He portrays the role of Baek Hyun-woo, the son of farmers from Yongdu-ri who married into a chaebol family, and he seems to effortlessly display all his charms.

Baek Hyun-woo is a lawyer who graduated from Seoul National University Law School. He is the legal director of the Queens Group, possessing a smart brain and visuals more like a chaebol than a chaebol. Despite entering the chaebol family after falling in love with Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won), the daughter of the Queens Group, they end up divorcing after three years of marriage. However, he realizes his love for his wife again after she receives a terminal illness diagnosis.

Kim Soo-hyun has truly embodied the character of Baek Hyun-woo. He timely appears to rescue Hong Hae-in when she is in crisis, shields her from the rain with an umbrella… He displays jealousy and tension upon the appearance of the secretive Yoon Eun-sung (Park Sung-hoon), who shows favor towards Hong Hae-in. Furthermore, he struggles to save the ruined Queens family. His character is a typical prince who appears at every crisis to rescue the female lead. Kim Soo-hyun seamlessly blends into the role of Baek Hyun-woo as if tailor-made for him, exuding a sense of perfection.

However, he is not just playing the role of a cool prince. Similar to Cheon Song-yi (Jun Ji-hyun) in “My Love from the Star”, in “Queen of Tears”, Baek Hyun-woo also shows a comedic aspect. From the drunken crying scene in the first episode to childish jealousy and cuteness as he falls in love with Hong Hae-in again, Kim Soo-hyun has added additional dimensions to the character. He perfectly portrays Baek Hyun-woo’s story, captivating viewers with his charismatic performance.

Despite facing awkward situations such as rumors of a high appearance fee or dating rumors sparked by a “two-shot” selfie uploaded by actress Kim Sae-ron, Kim Soo-hyun has overcome everything with his acting.

In addition, his chemistry with Kim Ji-won, who plays the role of Hong Hae-in, has also been praised, naturally leading to an upward trend in ratings. Although the drama recorded a modest 5.9% viewership rating (hereafter based on Nielsen Korea) for the first episode broadcast on March 9th, it achieved its highest rating of 19% through continuous increases in subsequent episodes. As the romantic storyline gains momentum, surpassing the highest-rated tvN drama is only a matter of time.

“Queen of Tears”, writer Park Ji-eun’s third collaboration with Kim Soo-hyun following “My Love from the Star” and “The Producers”, garnered significant attention even before its broadcast. Kim Soo-hyun gained popularity among global fans through “My Love from the Star”, establishing himself as a top actor, and won the acting grand prize that year for his role in “The Producers”. Sharing the glory with writer Park Ji-eun twice, especially considering that writer Park Ji-eun’s previous work “Crash Landing on You” recorded the highest viewership rating in tvN drama history, the expectations for “Queen of Tears” were higher than any other work.

Kim Soo-hyun’s choice to trust writer Park Ji-eun’s vision for the third time has once again proven to be correct. Writer Park Ji-eun drew the role that suits Kim Soo-hyun best and Kim Soo-hyun brought the character to life with his profound acting. Kim Soo-hyun, who repaid writer Park Ji-eun’s trust with his acting, was indeed the “best”, as stated by writer Park Ji-eun.
