“Iron Man” Robert Downey Jr. showed shocking visual on “The Sympathizer” set

Robert Downey Jr., the star of “Iron Man”, appeared in an unrecognizable visual on the filming set of an HBO drama. 

On January 12th (KST), British news site Daily Mail UK published several images of Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. while filming on the set of HBO TV series “The Sympathizer”, which is directed by Park Chan Wook

Here, Robert Downey Jr. can be seen wearing a shocking old man makeup look. He also flaunted a balding red-hair wig, a pink button-up shirt and maroon coat, looking like an old man.

According to Daily Mail, it was reported at the end of last year that Robert Downey Jr. will assume “multiple supporting roles as the main antagonists in ‘The Sympathizer’, all of whom representing a different arm of the American establishment”. In fact, the actor himself confirmed in an interview that he is acting 5 different roles at once. 

On the other hand, “The Sympathizer”, which is based on a novel of the same name, depicts Vietnamese and American societies in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, through the eyes of the protagonist, a double agent. The original novel, written by Vietnamese-American author Viet Thanh Nguyen, won the Pulitzer Prize. Its drama adaptation is co-produced by HBO and A24, with Robert Downey Jr.’s wife, Susan Downey, serving as executive producer and Park Chan Wook’s production company Moho Films also participating in the production

Meanwhile, director Park Chan Wook mentioned the filming process in an interview with American media Variety, saying, “for this one I’m only directing three out of seven. And of course, the Korean food [in Los Angeles] helps!”. He also commented on Robert Downey Jr. and described the actor as “an amazing actor and such an energetic man and a joy to be around. It’s been really great to be working with him”. 

Finally, Park Chan Wook commented on Robert’s wife Susan and called her “an intelligent woman” and “a smart producer”.

“It’s been great to work with her and she’s been tremendous help to me,” he said.
