A shocking incident occurred in Incheon on the evening of July 20, when a 63-year-old man fatally shot his son with a homemade firearm during a birthday celebration. The crime unfolded at a high-rise apartment in Songdo International City, with several family members, including two grandchildren, present at the time.
Initial reports suggested the event marked the son’s birthday. However, subsequent investigation by Incheon Yeonsu Police confirmed that it was, in fact, the father’s birthday gathering. Present at the scene were the suspect’s son and daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and a family acquaintance six individuals in total.

According to police, the suspect, identified as A, used a self-manufactured pipe gun loaded with multiple metal pellets. He discharged two rounds at his son, resulting in fatal injuries. The incident was reported by the daughter-in-law, who contacted emergency services stating that “my father-in-law shot my husband.”
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in his personal vehicle. Law enforcement initiated an immediate manhunt and arrested him roughly three hours later in the Seocho-gu district of Seoul.

The situation escalated further when the suspect disclosed to authorities that he had installed an explosive device in his residence in Ssangmun-dong, Dobong-gu. Police swiftly evacuated the apartment complex and, with the assistance of a special task force, located and safely removed several dangerous materials, including 14 containers of thinner and a timer-equipped device—components indicative of a homemade bomb.
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police confirmed, “The explosive device was in a condition where, had it detonated, it could have caused significant casualties.” A detailed forensic analysis of the materials is currently underway.

Authorities are also investigating how the suspect acquired the knowledge to construct the firearm and explosives. Early findings suggest he may have referenced online video tutorials. Police have confirmed the discovery of multiple homemade firearms and ammunition at the suspect’s residence and in his vehicle.
The motive behind the crime remains under investigation. A formal police briefing is scheduled for the afternoon of July 21.
This incident, involving both gun violence and explosive threats, is considered particularly severe in South Korea, a country where such acts are exceedingly rare. The case has drawn national attention and sparked concerns over online access to weapon-building content and growing domestic tensions.
