“I’m sorry”, Lee Dong Hwi refused to answer questions about his lover Jung Ho Yeon?

Actor Lee Dong Hwi asked media outlets to understand why he kept silent over his relationship with model-actress Jung Ho Yeon.

On February 3rd, Lee Dong Hwi had an interview at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, about his new movie “Maybe We Broke Up”. Here, the actor was asked if he resonated with the story.

“Maybe We Broke Up”, which stars Lee Dong Hwi, is a movie depicting the process of people in love becoming strangers. In the film, Lee Dong Hwi assumed the role of Lee Jun Ho, a person who tried to do various things after graduating from an art college, but failed and was preparing for a public official exam.

On this day, Lee Dong Hwi said that it was difficult to understand the character of Lee Jun Ho, who spent years studying for an exam. “I’m not that type of person at all. I don’t stay at home”, he said, adding, “I do something immediately because I don’t want to hear nagging from other people”. It is known that Jun Ho is a character who lives with his girlfriend Ah Yeong (played by Jung Eun Chae) and spends his time meaninglessly rather than focusing on studying for the exam.

The actor also added, “I really don’t understand. I can sympathize with Ah Yeong’s difficulty, especially when her boyfriend lied and got caught playing games (with friends). To me, it would have felt like being caught by my mother. If I were Ah Yeong, I would have kicked (those people) out of the house”.

Nevertheless, Lee Dong Hwi expressed that he can relate with the situation Jun Ho was in, saying, “Before my debut, I had a hard time because of the numerous uncertainties. I was in this situation where I had to wait for the audition results announcement and keep trying and auditioning, but anyway, that is the process of youth that everyone goes through. It was different, but the situation was familiar to me, so I think I was able to convey (the emotions) quickly when acting.”

To Ah Yeong, Jun Ho is familiar and comfortable, but on the other hand, he is portrayed as a selfish and pathetic boyfriend. When asked what kind of boyfriend he is in real life, Lee Dong Hwi replied, “I’m an ordinary person, nothing special. I do as much as others do, but there are times when I’m worse than others.”

The actor gave a short answer before saying “I’m sorry”, as if he was concerned that his words might be seen as an anecdote about his relationship with his lover, model-actress Jung Ho Yeon.

Lee Dong Hwi drew laughter as he even made a serious(?) apology to his co-stars Jung Eun Chae and Jung Da Eun during the press conference. Jung Da Eun responded, “I didn’t know why Anna (her character) is interested in Jun Ho so I discussed it with the director a lot. I asked him to tell me what points about Jun Ho that makes the young and immature Anna fall in love with him”.

Lee Dong Hwi expressed his thoughts, saying “If the audience can’t understand that, it would be because of my poor acting ability”, adding “The situation itself is already dramatic. The fact that Jun Ho and Ah Yeong meet someone else right after breaking up is unrealistic. That only happened as a material for a movie”. He explained, “There was something like that. Some people want to meet someone different from the person they dated in the past when in a relationship, while others may meet someone similar to their previous lovers. If you look around at your friends, many will be influenced by their past relationships. I think Jun Ho might have been attracted to Anna at that time because she has a different side from the person who made him suffer a hard time”.

Regarding Jung Eun Chae, Lee Dong Hwi poured out compliments, saying “She owns an elegant appearance of a woman that would appear in a portrait in an art museum”. He continued, “I’ve been a fan who liked her after watching her acting. She’s really a great actress in real life. I had fun filming the movie with such an actress who also likes challenging new things”. Lee Dong Hwi added, “If Jung Eun Chae is a portrait, then I’m a folk painting”.

The conversations continue with the topic of interesting scenes in the movie. In the movie, there is a part when Ah Yeong sees Jun Ho eat ramen and asks him, “Give me a bite”, so Jun Ho offers to cook ramen for her but Ah Yeong refuses. She then takes away Jun Ho’s ramen, making him annoyed. The two’s relationship becomes cold since then. When asked if he had experienced a similar story, Lee Dong Hwi said, “It happened with me and my friends. I’m not used to sharing things because I’m an only child.”

Since the movie is about love and breakup, more questions about the actor’s love story were raised. When asked, “Is your romantic relationship with Jung Ho Yeon going well?”, Lee Dong Hwi responded, “I’ve been asked that question for my previous movie, and I had an interview with my senior, but I saw that issue appeared on real-time search at No. 1 and No. 2. I hope all of my movies can shine no matter what of work they are… (I hope people won’t mention Jung Ho Yeon when I’m talking about my work)”, adding, “I’m asking for your understanding”.

“Maybe We Broke Up” will premiere on February 8th.
