Idols who fail to make a positive, lasting impression in their acting debuts

BLACKPINK Jennie, Jisoo, and IU have a hard time establishing themselves as actresses.

Jennie first got a role in HBO’s miniseries “The Idol” where she transforms into Dyanne, a best friend to Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp). In the first episode, Jennie was criticized for engaging in sexualized choreography that lacks realistic depiction. Her expression in the scene only increased its obscenity.

In the next episode, Jennie received another wave of criticism after delivering an explicit line when she was talking to Tedros (The Weeknd). While the controversies did bring more attention to the drama, that did not diminish the overall negative response of the public.

Moreover, netizens were not pleased with how Jennie’s delivery of the lines. Even if the script was to be improved, this acting alone could hardly shine.

Jisoo, another BLACKPINK member, also came under fire when she had her acting debut in “Snowdrop”. The drama was heavily criticized at first due to a distorted historical depiction allegation of the 1980s pro-democratic movement in Korea.

The criticism soon turned into real action when a petition containing more than 300,000 signatures was sent to the Blue House, the executive office and official residence of Korea’s head of state. Sponsors pulled away from the drama. Netizens came at Jisoo for choosing to act in this drama.

At the time, JTBC affirmed that it was purely a misunderstanding and “Snowdrop” did not distort the pro-democratic movement. Nonetheless, that only fueled the anger of the public. They filed a lawsuit against JTBC and demanded the TV network to be closed.

In the face of the public backlash, JTBC filed lawsuits against individuals perpetuating malicious rumors that tarnish its reputation.

While the drama proceeded to air, Jisoo still stumbled across numerous criticisms about her stiff and unnatural acting.

IU also came into criticism in her first few acting roles in “Dream High” and “Moon Lovers”. It was only when she starred in “My Mister” that the actress showed an improved acting performance. “Hotel Del Luna” was another breakthrough for the singer. Nonetheless, her acting performance still draws mixed opinions.
