A scandal that began as an anonymous accusation has ended in one of the most shocking family betrayals in Korean sports history. National football player Hwang Ui-jo once one of South Korea’s top strikers and former boyfriend of T-ara’s Hyomin has seen his career destroyed after a leaked 18+ video went viral online, only for investigators to later uncover a stunning twist: the perpetrator was his own sister-in-law.

In June 2023, Hwang was accused online of cheating on multiple women and secretly filming sexual encounters. Soon after, several explicit videos allegedly showing the footballer were uploaded to social media, where they spread rapidly and were even sold illegally, causing massive public outrage.

Hwang immediately filed a defamation lawsuit against the anonymous account, denying all allegations of infidelity and exploitation. He also requested a police investigation to find whoever had distributed the footage.

Police traced the IP address and identified the main suspect as Hwang’s sister-in-law, who had access to the phone containing the videos. At first, Hwang believed it was a misunderstanding and asked authorities to release her, while the woman denied wrongdoing, claiming she would “never hurt someone [she] loved.”

However, during a court hearing on February 21, 2024, the sister-in-law confessed. She admitted leaking the video out of revenge after work-related conflicts with Hwang, saying she wanted to “teach him a lesson.”

“My husband and I sacrificed everything for Hwang we left Korea, moved abroad, and supported him for five years. But he never acknowledged our efforts. I felt betrayed when he didn’t appreciate our help,” she told the court. “I only wanted to scare him, not destroy his career. I blurred the woman’s face before uploading the clip.”

Further investigation revealed that Hwang himself had recorded sexual videos without consent, violating South Korea’s privacy and sexual violence laws.

On February 14, 2025, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced Hwang Ui-jo to one year in prison, suspended for two years, along with 200 hours of community service and 40 hours of sexual violence education. His sister-in-law received a three-year prison sentence for leaking the video and committing an act of personal retaliation.

Following the ruling, the Korea Football Association (KFA) announced that Hwang’s position on the national team had been permanently suspended, effectively ending his international career and eliminating any chance of appearing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The scandal has not only shattered Hwang’s public image but also exposed the darker side of the sports industry where power struggles, personal grudges, and revenge can collide disastrously.

Korean netizens reacted with shock and disbelief:

“A star who lost everything overnight.”
“The sister-in-law turned family drama into a criminal case.”
“A painfully expensive lesson for Hwang Ui-jo.”

The case serves as a sobering reminder of how a single moment of recklessness—or betrayal can destroy an entire career. In an age where private lives are under constant scrutiny, the boundaries between public image and personal choices have never been more fragile.
