Hwang Jung-min Cried During Promotion for “12.12: The Day” In Gwangju Because Of This Fan’s Banner

Actor Hwang Jung-min shed tears when he saw a phrase in a banner made by the audience in a greeting event of “12.12: The Day”

On the afternoon of December 17th, director Kim Sung-soo and the lead actors Hwang Jung-min, Jung Woo-sung, Lee Sung-min and Kim Sung-kyun of the movie “12.12: The Day” visited Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, to greet the audience.

The actors appeared in front of the audience and expressed their gratitude. Hwang Jung-min shed tears when he saw the placards of the audience sitting in front of him. The audience was holding placards with the words “I’ve been waiting for 43 years for the spring of Seoul to come to Gwangju.”

In actual history, rebel forces led by Chun Doo-hwan took power in 1979 by causing the 1212 (December 12) military revolt, and he later rose to the presidency in an unjust way. The following year, the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement took place in Gwangju but bloody suppression and terrible slaughter were carried out against the citizens, resulting in numerous victims. Hwang Jung-min as Chun Doo-kwang, based on Chun Doo-hwan, in the “12.12: The Day.”

Hwang Jung-min was so emotional at the phrase that he couldn’t continue his speech, saying, “I worked on this project with a sense of duty. The actors… Thank you.” Hwang Jung-min, whose eyes turned red, hurriedly handed over the microphone to Lee Sung-min. He then looked at the floor all the time, and eventually shed tears, turning his back to the audience and wiping away the tears.

After receiving the microphone, Lee Seong-min said, “I think we know how he feels, as we do the same job,” adding, “And as I’ve been preparing for this movie, I feel various emotions even at this moment when I meet the audience. I get goosebumps all the time I talk about it. I’m grateful and it’s my first time greeting him on stage in Gwangju.”

Hwang Jung-min is currently staying in Haenam to shoot his new movie “Hope,” directed by Na Hong-jin, but whenever he has time, he participates in a greeting events for “12.12: The Day.”

Meanwhile, “12.12: The Day” depicts a nine-hour fight to prevent a rebellion by the new military forces that took place in the capital city Seoul on December 12, 1979.
