On June 10, a new video titled “The Day ChatGPT Hit Me With Brutal Honesty(?)” was uploaded to Hwang Jung Eum’s YouTube channel.
During a conversation with the production staff, Hwang Jung Eum brought up the beloved sitcom High Kick Through the Roof, reflecting on how the series shaped her career. She said, “High Kick Through the Roof made me who I am today. I was such a unique person that director Kim Byung Wook told me, ‘Just act as yourself.’ He’s the one who really created me as an actress.”
She then recalled a moment involving her former co-stars, saying, “I’m really grateful to senior actor Jeong Bo Seok. When teacher Lee Soon Jae passed away, he called me and said, ‘If it’s uncomfortable for you to go alone, should I go with you?’ Julien Kang came along too. There were many reporters there at the time, but Julien Kang blocked me completely with his big frame. That’s why no articles came out.”
Veteran actor Lee Soon Jae passed away on November 25 last year. At the time, Hwang Jung Eum was facing public criticism over allegations involving the embezzlement of funds from her one-person agency. After repaying the full 4.3 billion won involved, she received a suspended sentence of two years in prison with four years of probation.
Following her remarks, many netizens criticized Hwang Jung Eum for what they described as an inappropriate comment about the funeral. Reactions included, “It sounds like not getting media coverage at the funeral was more important,” “The High Kick cast supported her, yet she’s bringing negative attention,” and “Did she go to pay respects just to manage her image?”
Meanwhile, Hwang Jung Eum married former professional golfer-turned-businessman Lee Young Don in 2016, and the couple had two sons together. However, the actress finalized divorce proceedings in 2024, officially ending their marriage.
