“Harry Potter” star Rupert Grint explained his absence from co-star Robbie Coltrane’s funeral

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in “Harry Potter”, revealed the reason he didn’t attend the funeral of Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid. 

Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” franchise, a forest keeper who captivated audiences around the world with his friendly charm, died in October 2022.

When the news of Robbie Coltrane’s death was reported, fans as well as fellow “Harry Potter” cast members, such as Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, expressed condolences to him.

In the midst of this, however, Rupert Grint, who assumed the role of Ron Weasley, did not attend Robbie Coltrane’s funeral, raising questions.

Instead, after receiving the sad news that Coltrane had passed away, Rupert Grint posted Instagram, “Heartbroken to hear that Robbie is gone. I’ll never forget the smell of cigars and beard glue – a wonderful combination. No one else on this planet could of played Hagrid, only Robbie. Just as Hagrid was in the books and films Robbie was in life – warm, compassionate and hilarious. A giant hearted man who was still looking out for us even decades later. Sending love to his family. ”

In addition, Rupert Grint recently mentioned Robbie Coltrane in an interview with British GQ, saying, “And Robbie, losing him was particularly tough. He really was the most wonderful being.”

Afterwards, when asked if he attended Coltrane’s funeral, Rupert Grint said no, and added, “I don’t claim to know him outside work.” 

Moreover, the actor also spoke about the death of Richard Harris, the actor who previously played headmaster Albus Dumbledore. “I was 13, in a hotel promoting the second movie, when I was told. It was a hard thing to contemplate”, said Rupert.

In the same interview, Rupert Grint said that he wanted to produce a TV series for “Harry Potter”. He confessed, “I’d love to see Harry Potter be adapted into a TV show. I think it would really work. I’m sure the films will get remade, anyway.”

Meanwhile, British actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hogwarts’ forest keeper Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” series, passed away on Oct 14th last year at the age of 72.
