Actor Hao Shao Wen first appeared on screen at just three years old in a Taiwanese fruit juice commercial an appearance that would completely change his life and launch him into stardom.

His chubby, adorable looks soon caught the attention of renowned director Kevin Chu, who cast him in New Legend of Shaolin. That single role transformed Hao Shao Wen into one of the most recognizable child stars in the Chinese-language entertainment industry.

The “Golden Child” of Chinese-Language Showbiz

Born in 1990 in Taiwan, Hao Shao Wen became famous for his bald-headed, glasses-wearing, round-cheeked appearance in New Legend of Shaolin. His natural comedic timing and expressive acting quickly made him a household name across Asia.

Following that breakout success, he starred in a string of popular films alongside major stars, including Shaolin Popey (with Vivian Hsu and Jimmy Lin), Ten Brothers, and Nezha Conquers the Monkey King.

At the height of his fame, Hao Shao Wen was reportedly the highest-paid child actor in Taiwan, earning lucrative advertising contracts and gaining nicknames such as “The Chubby Kid” and “Golden Boy.” His early success was so overwhelming that many believed he had already achieved more before adolescence than most would in a lifetime.

A Career That Took a Sudden Downturn

Just as his career was flourishing, Hao Shao Wen announced in 2003 that he would step away from acting to focus on his studies. He later returned to the entertainment industry at age 18 after graduating from Tamkang University but the industry had changed.

The luck and spotlight that once followed him were gone. His popularity sharply declined, and he struggled to land meaningful roles. Gradually, he faded from mainstream attention and was no longer prioritized by producers.

Between 2010 and 2017, Chinese media described his life as “extremely difficult and financially strained.” He was expelled from school, faced unstable income, and was burdened by large debts left by his parents. The accumulation of setbacks pushed the former star into severe depression.

During this period, Hao Shao Wen accepted minor, uncredited roles and worked tirelessly for modest pay. Reports revealed that he even took part-time jobs at food stalls and cleaning services to make ends meet.

“I once auditioned for the role of a street thug, but the director sent me away, saying I couldn’t even act it convincingly,” he recalled bitterly in an interview.

A Quiet, Stable Life With Family

In 2023, Hao Shao Wen married his longtime girlfriend Lin Ning Rui after more than two years of dating. His wife had previously been married and has a daughter from that relationship. According to Chinese media, Hao Shao Wen fell in love with her at first sight and was determined to marry her so he could protect and care for both mother and child. Lin Ning Rui, in turn, was deeply moved by his sincerity toward her daughter.

In early 2025, the couple welcomed their first child together, surprising many fans who remembered Hao Shao-Wen only as the mischievous boy from New Legend of Shaolin now a devoted husband and father.

While he has not starred in any major hit dramas or films in recent years, Hao Shao Wen has found new success through livestream e-commerce, selling products online using his trademark humor and approachability.

Though his childhood stardom is long behind him, Hao Shao Wen continues to sustain his career in his own way. His scandal-free private life and perseverance through adversity have earned him renewed goodwill from the public.

From Asia’s most famous child star to a man who rebuilt his life from hardship, Hao Shao Wen’s journey stands as a quiet reminder that fame may fade but resilience endures.
