Appearing as a guest on the July 18 episode of MBN’s Kim Ju Ha’s Day & Night, Goo Hye Sun reflected on the frightening medical emergency that occurred while she was filming and the emotional aftermath of the experience.
Speaking about her condition, she explained that it stemmed from severe food allergies. “I was told it was a food allergy. I had allergic reactions to most kinds of food,” she said.
Goo then recalled the frightening moments when she lost consciousness during filming. “I fainted a couple of times while filming. One time, I collapsed in the restroom. A sanitation worker noticed my hair and found me. At that moment, I remember thinking, ‘I wish they wouldn’t open the door,'” she shared, recalling the embarrassment and fear she felt.
She also spoke about being rushed to the hospital and how the experience later inspired her to reflect on the meaning of human dignity.
“After I was taken to the hospital, I came across a poem about underwear. It was really about dignity,” she said. “When someone goes into cardiac arrest on the street, emergency responders cut off all of their clothes with scissors. They had to remove all of my clothes as well. I later learned that many people don’t want to be exposed like that in front of others. I remember thinking, ‘I can’t die here.’ It made me think deeply about human dignity.”
The actress admitted that the unexpected loss of privacy during the emergency left a lasting emotional impact on her.
Despite enduring such a frightening ordeal, Goo revealed that her long battle with food allergies ended in a surprisingly unexpected way. “I have to eat to live, so I couldn’t imagine spending my life avoiding food,” she said. “Before I thought I might die, I asked myself what I wanted to eat the most, and it was soy sauce-marinated crab.”
She revealed that she even prepared allergy medication before eating the dish. “I thought, ‘If I die, at least I’ll die after eating what I really want.’ But strangely, nothing happened. I didn’t have any allergic reaction, and after that, I gradually became fine.”
Goo concluded that since that unexpected experience, she has been able to eat normally without suffering from the severe food allergies that once threatened her life, leaving both the show’s hosts and viewers surprised by the remarkable turn of events.
