Actress Go Youn Jung recently spoke candidly about the insecurities that come with success, especially after achieving over 10 million followers on social media a milestone that mirrors the internal struggles of her character in the Netflix series Can This Love Be Translated? During an interview with Mydaily at a café in Seoul’s Jongno district on January 23, Go Youn Jung shared how deeply she connects with her character Cha Mu Hee’s anxiety.

In Can This Love Be Translated?, multilingual interpreter Joo Hojin becomes the translator for global superstar Cha Mu Hee, setting the stage for an unpredictable romantic comedy. Go Youn Jung not only portrays Cha Mu Hee, a celebrity with 10 million followers, but also her alter ego Do Ra Mi, capturing a compelling emotional duality. Her on‑screen chemistry with co‑star Kim Seon Ho has also garnered attention.

Cha Mu Hee’s meteoric rise from an unknown actor with fewer than 10,000 followers to an international sensation triggers intense anxiety and emotional turmoil that manifests as another persona. Coincidentally, during filming, Go Youn Jung herself surpassed 10 million followers on Instagram, a milestone that made the project feel especially meaningful to her.

“I reached 10 million followers on Instagram, and maybe that’s why this role felt so significant to me,” she explained. While she doesn’t feel her personal experience exactly mirrors Mu Hee’s, Go Youn Jung said she does empathize with the pressure that follows rapid success. “Because Mu Hee wanted success so badly, anxiety came with it. I might not feel it as intensely as her, but I do understand the fear of wanting happiness and success to last. In this line of work, a single misstep a wrong word or a poor judgment could make everything disappear in an instant.”

Go Youn Jung admitted she still feels nervous at public events and award shows, but she believes the promotional activities for this project have helped her grow. “I’m still nervous, but I didn’t expect to change much. However, going out, promoting the series, meeting people, and talking face‑to‑face has strengthened my confidence. It was a very intense experience.”

She also offered insight into how she sees Cha Mu Hee’s anxiety taking the form of Do Ra Mi, describing it as a defense mechanism born from fear of being hurt.

Support from co‑star Kim Seon Ho and PD Na Young Seok has been especially meaningful. Go Youn Jung shared that filming the web variety show Nattering with Na with Kim Seon Ho helped her grow closer to PD Na Young Seok. “Because we saw each other so often, I stopped feeling self‑conscious about the cameras. Their encouragement made me so comfortable that I almost forgot I was being filmed,” she said with a smile.

She also responded playfully to comments from PD Shin Won Ho, who once described her as “like a 5th‑grade boy.” “I definitely agree with that,” she chuckled, “but maybe it’s time for some growth. Next year, maybe I’ll be more like a middle‑schooler?” a humorous take on embracing the journey of personal and professional development.
