Go Min-si, Park Bo-gum, Ji Chang-wook: When Actors Become New Variety Stars
Many actors and actresses have taken on a new challenge as variety shows’ cast members.
Go Min-si has recently announced her participation in season 2 of tvN’s “Jinny’s Kitchen.” “Jinny’s Kitchen” is a program about actor Lee Seo-jin opening a small snack bar overseas. Season 2 of the show, which Go Min-si joins, will be filmed in Iceland, and the broadcast date is yet to be decided.
Earlier, Park Bo-gum and Ji Chang-wook also announced that they will appear on JTBC’s “My Name Is Gabriel,” which is being prepared for a broadcast in June. This is a program in which stars go abroad and experience other people’s lives. It is a new work of producer Kim Tae-ho, who directed MBC’s hit show “Infinite Challenge.”
The two aforementioned shows are both directed by famous producers who boast star-studded popularity and filmed abroad. On top of that, we can see the trend of recruiting actors in variety shows these days.
Since the pandemic, OTT platforms and YouTube viewership have increased, as the public is not enjoying TV broadcasts as much as before. With the creation of various platforms, the quality of content has improved, the public’s standard has increased, and it is an environment where viewers can feel the limitations of TV programs.
Comparing the programs aired in the 2000s and 2024, it can be seen that the stars in variety shows has not changed significantly. Twenty years have passed, but the broadcasting industry has hardly made new generations. Of course, it is said that these main variety stars have remained excellent then and now, but the public has no choice but to feel cliché.
However, the broadcast production teams anre organizing the cast members of variety programs in a new and fresh way. As they realized the boredom of the viewers and started to cope with it, actors or idol singers, which are rarely seen in these programs, started to join. It is not easy for fresh but inexperienced actors to create synergy with variety veterans. However, if they work faithfully with responsibility, they will be recognized for their new charms and create the personality of the programs.
