Girls’ Generation’s Yoona and Sooyoung’s multiple convergences in their acting careers

Girls’ Generation’s Yoona and Sooyoung share similarities, from co-stars to film roles, in their acting careers.

“Blue Dragon Film Awards 2019” is where Yoona and Choi Sooyoung crossed paths as nominees for different award categories. While Choi Sooyoung is nominated for the “Best New Actress” Award for her role in “Miss & Mrs. Cops”, Yoona is honored to be listed as one in five nominees for “Best Actress” Award for box-office success ”Exit”.

While the two could not win the nominated award, for idols expanding into acting, being nominated was already a recognition and achievement for both Yoona and Sooyoung. It was also a rare occasion to see two members of the same girl group being nominated at the same time in the well-known “Blue Dragon Film Awards”.

Being an avid drama fan, one must know or hear about Yoona in her collaboration with Ji Chang Wook for the high-performing series tvN’s “The K2” in 2016. Their chemistry and exceptionally well pairing, from couple-like appearances to interactions, as well as acting performances attracted a large pool of audiences.

Six years down the path, Choi Sooyoung is also paired with Ji Chang Wook in a television series called “If You Wish Upon Me” on KBS2. While nothing is certain about their relationship development, the co-stars are already bickering around the clock on-screen. Some viewers are eager to see if this new pairing can live up to the previous Yoona and Chang Wook’s chemistry and dynamics.

Another similarity is the actresses’ characters on-screen. Specifically, both actresses are taking over a nurse role for their drama series projects this year. In “If You Wish Upon Me”, Sooyoung plays Seo Yeon Ju, a nurse working in a hospice hospital who looks after and helps realize her patients’ final wishes. She is a passionate and energized nurse who never surrenders in faces of difficulties. Her character is also a workout enthusiast.

Yoona plays Go Mi Ho in “Big Mouth”, wife of a not-so-successful lawyer Park Chang Ho and a working nurse at a big hospital. She is a smart, quick-witted person who has a bold personality behind a gentle appearance. Wife of a wrongly accused prisoner, Go Mi Ho pushes through many obstacles to clear her husband’s name.

Another point to consider is that their co-stars are both superstars in the industry. Ji Chang Wook and Lee Jong Suk are both actors who have had long lists of film successes and reputation attached to their names. While not being in the same time slot, the two actresses’ series are having different rating performances, with Yoona’ “Big Mouth” surpassing Sooyoung’s “If You Wish Upon Me”. Hopefully, both dramas can gain a larger audience base and find their respective successes in this comeback period.
