(G)I-DLE’s Shuhua: Constant Controversies over Arrogant Statements

Statements from (G)I-DLE’s Shuhua has got netizens showing mixed reactions between “humor” and “arrogance”.

Recently, when introducing the title song “Klaxon” in (G)I-DLE’s new album, member Shuhua sparked a debate due to her “arrogance”.

“Sorry to the other idols, because this summer the audience will only listen to (G)I-DLE’s music,” Shuhua said. Hearing this, the other members quickly waved their hands, suggesting that the youngest member’s statement was just a joke.

Meanwhile, despite (G)I-DLE’s new song having a summer vibe and is expected to trend like their previous releases, “Klaxon” is struggling on Korean music charts.

A day after its release, the song did not make it to the top 20 music charts in Korea. The playlist count is high, comparable to other popular fourth-generation groups, but “Klaxon” only garnered 338,573 streams. Additionally, (G)I-DLE did not appear on Spotify’s global artist chart on the day of the new release.

The declining achievements further contradict Shuhua’s statement. The audience believes she is overconfident and counting her chickens before they hatch.

Many viewers thus criticize the female idol, even bringing up her old statements and claiming that they negatively impact the group.

In particular, during a fancall, a fan announced they were getting married to Shuhua, saying, “I’m getting married soon, can you say something as a blessing?”. However, Shuhua did not congratulate the fan but simply replied, “Okay, I hope you don’t get divorced too soon,” and laughed out loud.

On another occasion, a fan commented on Instagram, “Shuhua, I’m out of money, can you lend me some?“, to which the (G)I-DLE beauty replied, “Shall I burn some for you?”, shocking many as in China, people only burn money for the dead.

At the 2022 Melon Music Awards, (G)I-DLE was nominated in the Song of the Year category, but the award eventually went to fellow girl group IVE. At the time, Shuhua became the focus when she confidently claimed that (G)I-DLE could win the Daesang – the most important award at the Korean music awards,  by saying, “I came to receive the Daesang.”

Amid the negative debates, some voices defend Shuhua, pointing out that she endures many hateful comments. Some viewers note that netizens are cheerful when male idols make playful comments but react poorly when Shuhua jokes around.
