Underboob, backless, and other bold cut-outs are getting popular among female Kpop idols. Netizens show mixed reactions.
As social distancing is lifted due to the dwindle of COVID-19, it is analyzed that summer fashion will become more and more daring due to increased outdoor activities.
From the ‘underboob’ trend that slightly reveals the lower breast, the backless look, to the low-rise fashion that shows parts of the pelvis, exposing outfits with bold cut-outs seem to be on the rise this summer.
Unlike previous seasons where “sexy” entails a deep neckline or ultra-mini items, “exposure fashion” is morphing into many other styles, and drawing a lot of attention from the public.
Underboob fashion that reveals the lower chest
Recently, the “underboob” style has been heating up the fashion world. The trend, which includes items that exposed slightly the lower breasts, was adopted by BLACKPINK Jennie, and singers Hyuna and BIBI.
In particular, as she attended a Jacquemus fashion show in March, Jennie drew attention for wearing a pink knit crop-top in this style.
Meanwhile, in April, BIBI appeared on the American program “Entertainment Tonight” in a techwear-inspired top that slightly revealed her boobs, and Hyuna added her own touch with a white shirt that only covered her chest slightly.
Low-rise fashion that barely covers the pelvis
The low-rise style, which shows parts of the pelvis, was re-introduced by fashion brand Miu Miu through their 2022 Spring-Summer collection, and has been gaining hype ever since.
Idol actress Yoona, a member of famous girl group SNSD, IVE Jang Won Young, actor Lee Yoo Mi, and broadcaster Kim Na Young are some notable names that have pulled off this retro style.
This fashion trend has also spreaded outside of Korea, with actress Nicole Kidman’s being one of the most iconic takes.
Backless fashion that shows the back
Backless fashion, which reveals the backside coolly, is a classic style that comes every summer. It is also a favorite style of female Kpop idols like BLACKPINK Jennie and soloist Jeon Somi.
Jennie also showed a backless look in July last year, which was followed by an unconventional backless top in April this year, when she attended the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in California.
On May 9th, Jeon Somi also updated a photo of her wearing a backless shirt that’s connected with a thin strap.
Bold cut-outs

Finally, another trending summer style is cut-out, where several parts of the outfits seemed to have been cut off. Many stars have boasted this particular style, which emphasizes the cut-out part.
Actress Han Ye Seul previously wore a cut-out dress with an exposed shoulder and pelvic lines, and Moon Ga Young wore cut-out legging. Meanwhile, MAMAMOO Hwasa, as well as models Irene and Jang Yoon Joo adorned similar body-hugging cut-out dresses.
On May 2nd, model-actress Jung Ho Yeon, who became a global trend after starring in the Netflix original series “Squid Game,” boasted a cut-out look with a round cut around her chest at the 2022 Met Gala event.

Bella Hadid, who is well-known for her fascinating physique, showed up at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in a white cut-out dress that revealed her pelvic line.
Cut-out fashion is relatively easier to access by the general public, as it is considered to be more modest and applicable than the “underboob”, “low-rise”, and “backless” trends. Ripped jeans with boldly torn knees or thighs are also considered as a cut-out look that can be challenged by anyone.
Will these increasingly revealing fashions really become popular?
While exposure fashion is gaining hype in the fashion and entertainment world, many pointed out that these bold trends will have a difficult time circulating among the general public.
These styles are more fitting for pictorials, and can be inconvenient in daily life, people claimed.
In addition, fashion trends in the entertainment world don’t often represent the public’s opinion.
Many netizens showed mixed responses at these rising fashion trends, writing comments like: “They are embarrassing to see,” “They are not clothes that you can wear around,” “Who keeps pushing it as a trend when women don’t want to?”, and “They look neither pretty or comfortable, and I don’t know what these fashions are for.”
