From fellow members to K-drama “rivals”: Girls’ Generation is taking over the small screen

Girls’ Generation members are taking on female lead roles in different K-dramas.

Celebrating the 15th anniversary of their debut this year, Girls’ Generation recently made a comeback as a whole group by releasing the 7th full album “FOREVER 1” on August 5th. After gathering for the first time in 5 years, Girls’ Generation has successfully completed their new album promotions.

After finishing their activities as Girls’ Generation, Yoona, Sooyoung, and Yuri, who are also active as actresses in the group, have gone from colleagues to “rivals” through their individual roles in ongoing K-dramas.

Yoona, who was the first member of Girls’ Generation to debut as an actress, is captivating viewers with her portrayal of Go Mi Ho, a fierce woman who is trying her best to save her husband in prison in MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama “Big Mouth” premiered on July 29th.

“Big Mouth” records the highest viewership rating among terrestrial dramas currently on air, breaking through the 10% ratings with its thrilling development. Episode 9 earned a nationwide rating of 11.5%. As a factor of high popularity and ratings, Yoona is drawing praise from viewers for her mature acting and believable couple chemistry with Lee Jong Suk.

In episode 10, Yoona shows off her impressive performance as veteran nurse Go Mi Ho. She is rumored to have consulted and worked hard with professional medical staff to realistically portray a nurse. In this episode, the scene where Go Mi Ho provokes the prison chief Park Yoon Gap (Jung Jae Sung) to open the hidden card without feeling intimidated gave viewers excitement. She drew attention by telling her worried husband in a strong tone, “Would someone else do something dangerous?”.

Sooyoung made a comeback to the small screen on August 10th in KBS 2TV’s drama “If You Wish Upon Me”. Like Yoona, Sooyoung also plays a nurse. Her character is obsessed with exercise. Seo Yeon Joo never lets her guard down on Yoon Gye Rae (Ji Chang Wook) at the beginning of the drama. They have been fighting since they first met, but she feels more delicate emotions as she spends more time together with him. In the latest episode 6, the distance between the two is narrowed as Seo Yeon Joo works on her last wish project with Yoon Gye Rae.

The chemistry between Sooyoung and Ji Chang Wook has been receiving positive reactions. Seo Yeon Joo knows about the past of Yoon Gye Rae, who had a poor childhood at an orphanage. She said, “I need to make him smile a little more than now. He definitely looks more handsome when he smiles,” signaling a hot straight-forward romance.

Unfortunately, If You Wish Upon Me” is recording disappointing ratings. The drama was off to its highest rating of 3.6% in episode 1, dropped to 1.9% in episode 4 and is currently below 2%. However, there is plenty of room for a rebound in ratings as the romance between the two leads, who are growing up by healing each other’s wounds from the past, is deepening their relationship and adding more fun to the drama. Attention is now focused on whether the romance between Sooyoung and Ji Chang Wook can raise the viewership ratings in the second half of “If You Wish Upon Me.”

Kwon Yuri is competing with her fellow members as she is taking on the lead role in ENA’s new drama “Good Job”. “Good Job” is a heroic investigative drama about chaebol detective Eun Seon Woo (Jung Il Woo) and Don Sera (Yuri), a woman who was born with hyperacuity.

In particular, “Good Job” is the follow-up drama to the hit “Extraordinary Attorney Woo”, which recently ended with an impressive rating of 17.5%. “Good Job” premiered to a rating of 2.3% in episode 1, which is a more promising start than the first episode of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” with a rating of only 0.9%. At the press conference, Yuri revealed the pressure she felt by taking over the time slot of “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” and expressed her wish for the drama to do well.

After the two first episodes of “Good Job” aired, viewers left favorable comments such as “It’s a drama that you can watch with infinite laughter”, “The characters’ personalities are great”, and “I laughed like crazy”.

Regarding Girls’ Generation members appearing in different dramas at the same time, Yuri showed their strong friendship by saying, “We are cheering and supporting each other passionately. During the first broadcast, we monitored and talked to each other.”
