From BTS, BIGBANG’s comeback to 4th generation growth…Will entertainment stocks start rebounding?

Entertainment stocks are on the rise as big idol groups from BTS to Super Junior and BIGBANG have confirmed their comeback in March.

Along with the Fed’s notice of a rate hike, entertainment stocks, which had been on a downward curve below expectations in the fourth quarter, seem to be gaining momentum little by little. On top of that, fourth-generation idol groups are raising expectations by recording new career-high every day.

According to the Korea Exchange on Feb 21st, HYBE closed at 275,500 won, up 4.95% from the previous trading day. HYBE’s stock is down 34.28% from its highest price earlier this month but is recovering after the announcement of a BTS concert last week. Like HYBE, SM, YG, and JYP, which had LAO slowed down, also rose 5.2%, 6.9%, and 7.28% from the previous day.

The four major agencies that are trying to rebound with their artists’ comeback

HYBE suddenly announced the hosting of BTS‘ online and offline concerts on Feb 16th. On that day, HYBE’s stock price jumped 7.32% in just one day, resulting in the buying trend of entertainment stocks. The mentioned concert, which is expected to attract about 45,000 audiences, will be the largest performance to be held after the pandemic, and people are paying attention to whether BTS‘ stretching, which has slowed down, will add vitality to the domestic concert market.

YG‘s pillar, BIGBANG and their comeback is also a factor in its rebound. YG‘s stock price, which collapsed to around 40,000 won in January this year, has recovered to around 60,000 won in early February after news of BIGBANG‘s comeback was reported.

The stock price of SM, which fell to the 50,000 won range, has risen to the 70,000 won range. SM will make a series of large comebacks of its artists in the first half of this year. From the end of this month to March, Red Velvet and Super Junior are set to promote their new works. NCT DREAM is also preparing for a comeback with the goal of returning in March. NCT‘s performance in Japan is also expected in May.

JYP is striving to expand its artist fandom by holding a series of tours to seven cities in the U.S. and concerts in Japan. JYP shares, which fell to around 30,000 won in line with the decline in entertainment stocks in January, recovered to 47,000 won thanks to the current buying trend.

What these four major agencies had in common in the first half of this year is that they rushed to announce the comeback of their representative faces. In particular, the industry is paying attention to BTS online and offline concerts held for two days in March. BTS is known to have generated tens of billions of won in sales only through online performances after the pandemic, and the profits are expected to be further maximized if it is arranged offline. On top of that, expectations for a reopening in the concert market, including TWICE and NCT overseas tours, are interpreted as the main background of the rebound this time.

The 4th generation runners are giving the audience high hope in the future of K-pop

Groups such as aespa, TXT, Stray Kids, ENHYPEN, etc. are reaching their career-high.

The growth of fourth-generation idol groups cannot be ignored. New groups that have worked hard for years, from girl groups to boy groups, are now settling down. It is no exaggeration to say that the 4th generation is a key momentum to take charge of the future of K-pop as they are aiming for the throne of their seniors with remarkable results in album sales.

HYBE seems to have chosen TXT (TomorrowXTogether) as its fourth-generation runner to after BTS. Except for its affiliates, TXT is the only new boy group launched by HYBE through Big Hit Music. Their second full-length repackage album, released last summer, sold 480,000 copies. Last year, which is the third year since their debut, TXT achieved 2 million copies sold in total. ENHYPEN, which is in its third year since its debut this year, is also a fierce competitor. ENHYPEN was launched through a collaboration between CJ ENM and Big Hit Music, and the group has sold 2 million copies last year.

The future of SM stands on the shoulders of aespa and NCT. SM successfully settled down the girl group aespa, which appealed its future-oriented image under the concept of Metaverse. “Savage”, released in October last year, sold 510,000 copies and achieved 100 million views on the music video. The number of views on the “Next Level” music video, which served as an opportunity for the group to strengthen their position, is currently at 200 million views.

nct 127

NCT and its unit groups are performing in earnest. NCT achieved 11 million copies sold last year alone and succeeded in achieving a career-high by recording sales that are difficult to secure only with Korean and Asian fandom. Considering that boy groups have an absolute influence on album sales, SM‘s sales performance in the first and second quarters is expected to depend on NCT DREAM‘s comeback in March and sales of NCT 127 concerts in Japan in May. Of course, the sales result from Super Junior and Red Velvet are also important.

stray kids

JYP‘s long-standing problem, which is the absence of a representative boy group, seems to be being solved. JYP has failed to produce a suitable boy group after 2PM but recently found a breakthrough as Stray Kids began to settle down. According to Gaon Chart, Stray Kids‘ total album sales stood at 2.64 million last year, more than doubling from the previous year. In particular, “Noisy”, the second full-length album released in August last year, sold 1.3 million copies, recording the first million-selling record for an artist belonging to JYP. They will release their new mini-album “Ordinary” on March 18th and compete face to face with NCT DREAM

NMIXX

JYP’s other tactic is to live up to the title of “Girl Group Master.” Following ITZY, JYP, which produced NiziU targeting the Japanese market, will launch a new girl group called NMIXX this year. Some members have been confirmed to be tested positive, but they plan not to delay their debut this month. JYP‘s confidence in making girl groups is considerable. Unlike other agencies that work hard on just one group, it is interpreted that this agency is trying to create a competitive structure by launching many different types of girl groups and maximizing sales based on them.

Although it succeeded in rebounding its stock prices by heralding BIGBANG‘s comeback, YG‘s future is also in the hands of the fourth-generation idol. YG succeeded in making BLACKPINK a top girl group in name and reality but is having difficulty producing a second BIGBANG. This agency’s current “homework” is definitely TREASURE

gen 4

First of all, we have to wait and see. TREASURE, which made a comeback with its first mini-album “JIKJIN” in the middle of this month, has 240,000 initial sales based on Hanteo Chart. Although it achieved a career-high on its own, the figure is somewhat insufficient compared to the performance shown by its rival boy groups last year. It is also insufficient compared to the initial sales of 810,000 copies of “Dimension: Dilemma” recorded by ENHYPEN, who debuted as the same time as TREASURE. In the end, YG‘s sales in the first half of the year are expected to depend on BIGBANG’s return unless BLACKPINK makes a comeback.
